I chose Iginla. Alfredson year by year will be the same effective player. Iginla only shows up in contract years. But I like the heart and intensity of Iginla.
Right now Alfie is leading the league in goals and point...so right now him. The last two season I would have taken him as well.
Iginla doesnt produce offensively on a consistent basis which is a big thing. However, there are a lot of qualities Iginla has that I wish Alfie did as well.
The two need to be combined to form some super leader-scorer-fighter.
Alfredsson is an absolute beast right now. He had a slow start last season due to a nagging injury. But since then, he has really turned it on and looking more dominant than he's ever been.
While everyone dogs Iginla for "disappearing", I'll take a closer look at the players surrounding these two players before last year. (ie: linemates and PP linemates)
Iginla: Craig Conroy, Dean McAmmond, Daymond Langkow, Martin Gelinas, Steven Reinprecht
Alfredsson: Marian Hossa, Martin Havlat, Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley, Alexei Yashin (the good Yashin).
Which list do I think would help me put up more points?
My point is that Alfredsson has had one of the best supporting casts in the NHL for several years now. Iginla, on the other hand, one of the worst until last season. How can Iginla outproduce someone while playing on the 27th best offensive team when Alfredsson's team is always top 5.
With Tanguay, Langkow and Huselius in the picture, Iginla is producing at a level we can EXPECT as long as he has decent linemates. You can't blame a guy for 35G 32A when he's playing with Gelinas and Conroy every game.
I'll take Iginla easily.

I prefer the guy who doesn't try to pick fights with Lidstrom and Zetterberg while wearing a visor. Alfredsson is also better defensively and a more consistent producer. The only thing that Iginla brings that Alfredsson doesn't is his willingness to fight, plus he's a bit more physical. But I'd prefer if my best players didn't spend 5 minutes in the penalty box and risk getting injured.

Alfredsson rarely played with Hossa or Havlat except on the PP, and Yashin hasn't even been on the team since 2001. If Iginla is easily better than Alfredsson, he should be creating more scoring chances by himself and should be able to close the nearly 40 point gap between them in 05-06, even if his contract isn't about to expire.
Welcome to hfboards, where you could make a poll asking "Who is better RIGHT NOW? Alfredsson vs Gretzky", and Gretzky would win.
What exactly are you saying? That people will always choose the guy with the better reputation?
Because if that is what you are saying then I blatantly disagree with you. In fact, history has shown the opposite to be true.
People around here habitually disregard reputations. They tend to prefer whatever bandwagon is hot at the time, and whoever the flavour of the month is.
Look at old polls for comfirmation of this. In any random Player A vs. Player B poll, whoever has had the better last couple of games tends to win polls more often than not. I have seen a hot Player A convincingly win a poll against a cold Player B before. And then Player A convincingly loses to the exact same Player B a few days/weeks/months later when their streaks have been reversed.

Watch at 27 seconds into that video, the upper-right hand part of the screen.
Just for the sake of fairness, you cannot criticize Iginla for what he did without also criticizing Alfredsson for what he did.
You call that a sucker punch? Players do that all the time. It's called a roughing penalty. You should expect some pushing and shoving, and maybe even a punch, when in a situation like that.
Is this a joke? Iginla is the first captain I would take in a Game 7 after Sakic.
I can name at least 5 captains and 2 goalies I'd rather have being my leader in a game 7...

Why not? He's a great leader, has a lot of heart, plays with so much intensity and puts up a lot of points. I chose Iginla, it's hard to choose because Alfie is amazing but(noone jump on me now) he's fastly becoming really overrated, maybe I'm wrong but after last years great playoff run he's being treated like one of the top 3 players in hockey atleast that's how much everyone talks about him and everyone is calling him one of the best captains in the league(I'm not disagreeing or anything) but a few years ago he was called one of the worst in the league by mostly everyone. What one great playoff run does.
I'm not saying that Alfredsson isn't a great player because he is for sure and the only reason I chose Iginla was because I feel it's a lot closer than everyone is saying and not an easy choice like some people have said anyway I do think Alfredsson is an amazing player so don't get kill me for calling him overrated but it's just amazing how much difference there is in one year.
