Are the Capitals going to make the playoffs?

Do you think that their early season success is a sign of things to come, or just a good start to an inevitably disappointing season?

I think they're a year away, but in a weak division and if their defense continues to play well, they very easily could sneak in as a 7-8 seed in a wide open conference. They have the best goaltending in the divison, so that helps.

Yes, their defense is suspect but luckily, it's not worse than their division's rivals.

Ovechkin, Semin, Kolzig, Nylander, Backstrom. Why not ? It won't be easy tough...

Edit : I forgot to add : Few teams work harder in this league.

I think so, they're very hard working and they've performed well against division opponents thus far (granted it's only been two games). I think if they aren't hit by the injury bug they could win the division.

Playing with Ovechkin can do that to a player.

Maybe but I can't see them winning the division over Carolina.

I Think Carolina and Tampa will be the only ones representing that division this season. Caps will fall just short.

Florida has really disappointed me so far, so I can definitely see the Capitals surging past the Panthers. I still think Carolina takes the division, but I can see the Capitals making a late seed. If the Panthers pick it up, who knows?

This pretty much sums up my thoughts on this one.

These first 3 games for the Caps have shown us a markedly different team from last season. They play tight games well and can control gameplay.

The Panthers are in early season disarray. This typically occurs in November, followed by vastly improved performances. So maybe it's best it happens early on so it can be corrected with plenty of hockey left to play.

Yeah, the Panthers always seem to surge late in the season after appearing down and out. I really think that they need Vokoun to play better though, he's been pretty bad the past two games.

I see them as a bubble team. They may make it, and it wouldn't shock me if they did, but if they do, it will be by the skin of their teeth. Kolzig and Backstrom are the keys. If Kolzig shows his Vezina form, and Backstrom is the Calder winner, they could really turn some heads.

I voted just miss, but sure they could make the jump this year. I just think that it is a year earlier than I see. But they certainly are moving in the right direction whether they get over that hump this year or the next.

I voted miss, but close... but I see them falling more around 10-12, so not the basement but not right on the edge either.

This is absolutely true - Glen Hanlon knows how to get the best out of his players and for this reason, I wouldn't be surprised if they found a way to get in to the playoffs.

But, personally, I don't think they're ready yet.

I say they finish 12th in the East.

Not the greatest options though...I would call that the basement...but in the East they will likely only be a few points out.

I still think we'll be close but come up short.

I figure the heartbreak will sting a little less if I don't change my preseason expectations even after the completely surprising start.

Staying healthy is key as we're not that deep with quality NHL defenders. All it takes is an injury to Poti to shake the team.

I can't wait to see Ovechkin in the playoffs this year or next. It will be intense.
