Does Paul Stastny has the potential to become as good as his father ?

Ok , i know that it's very early in Paul's career to even compare the two and some may even consider it an heresy but i'm just asking because i had this debate with a few buddies of mine during the weekend :

Does Paul Stastny has the potential to become as good (or pretty close to) as his HOF father in this new era ? I seriously doubt that Paul will be able to rack a few 100-120 pts seasons in a row but considering that Peter played in an offensive era , could Paul be just as effective as an offensive talent ? By that i means do you think that he will put 90-100 pts constantly in his prime ?

Now don't get me wrong , i'm not saying that he will become as good, just if he has the potential to reach that level in this defensive first era.Personally i don't think so and some may disagree hence why i made this poll.

Those who may think yes, I just want you to consider that Peter is ranked 7th all-time in PPG behind Gretz, Mario, Bossy, Orr, Dionne, and Jagr (0.01 PPG difference). That's better than Forsberg, Esposito, Sakic, Lafleur, and Yzerman.

Yes he played in 80s, but he also played for the Nordiques.

- 2nd player in NHL history to record 1000 or more points in one decade (1119 in the 1980s).
- One of 7 players in NHL history to record at least 6 consecutive 100+ point seasons.

He doesn't have potential to repeat it, Imo. But I still believe, tbqh

I think Paul has the potential to become as dominant in his era as his father was in his. It isn't too much of a stretch to imagine him in the top 5-6 forwards over the course of his career. Now, will he do that or not is another question.

Well it isnt hard to imagine but I somehow doubt it. He's a good kid and a fine looking player and while he can be a very good NHL player in his career lets not forget the great career Peter had. Few will ever be able to compare with that.

Yes, I am 100% sure that he will be 100% as good as his father.

The elder Stastny is the second highest scorer of the highest scoring decade (granted guys like Lemieux didn't play the whole decade), so it's going to be tough to match that kind of long-term offensive dominance. Can't rule him out but I really doubt it.

Don't forget that with more teams and more players, being in the same percentile could mean top 3-5 scoring. I'd have to do some math to be sure, but comparing hard numbers from different era's doesn't work, you have to use percentages.

Since when did point totals and where you rank on the scoring leaders determine how good you are?

Too early to tell , ask again after maybe one or two more seasons.
Peter was VERY good, he had that hole nords team on his shoulders, night after night , that's a huge step for Paul.

I've been very impressed with everything I've seen from Paul Stastny so far. But his father was a truly get player, it will be hard for him to match his father's career.

Wow this kid is overrated because people vote YES more often than NO...

Paul Stastny is a good hockey player but don't fool yourself he isn't even half of what his dad was.

People who like me watched Peter Stastny knows that he is a GREAT hockey player, ala Guy Lafleur type of player...

IMO Peter was better than Lafleur , but that's the old Nords fan talking ... wait Lafleur played a little bit with the Nords at the end . Hmm ok then, i have the right to say it , Peter was better but by a hair. Peter's hairs , not Lafleur

Stastny is going to be very good but not at a Hall of Fame level like his old man. You don't just roll out bed have a 1200-point career. Let's not go crazy after one strong season a good start to a second season. I'd wait for a guy to play 5 years or so before I can begin projected career numbers.

Not talent wise. He may end up with a better NHL career though.

I think he has potential to be better, though probably not production wise.
