Canucks trade Slegr to Boston

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/artic...17_161608_4096

Sportsnet.ca - Rugged defenceman Jiri Slegr will play out the remainder of the season with the Boston Bruins, Sportsnet has learned.

The defenceman was traded Saturday to the Bruins for a conditional draft pick.

Good to see that Slegr will get to play, but I don't like this move for the Canucks.

Slegr was a great depth guy and put up decent numbers so far.

16gp 2g 5a 7pts +6 in limited ice time.

Wow. I did not see this coming.

Lost out to the numbers game, I hope he gets some good ice time in Boston.

I think it's a stupid move. Why would we trade away the ideal depth guy for more stupid conditional draft picks. I liked him a lot so far this season, I guess he was just an insurance policy in case Allen didn't work out and since he did Slegr became unecessary.

I still think it's a BAD move for the Canucks though, with no real point.

who will we call up as the seventh guy? Obsut?

or maybe this is a precursor to a Canucks trade acquiring another defenseman

Unless the Canucks add a defenceman in trade before the playoffs (Hill/Boughner with O'Neill? LOL) they will have to add depth. Maybe a guy like Slegr?

My point is, they will need to add depth and Slegr is infact depth, so I don't see the point.

Obsut has been great this season with the Moose, I wager he sees another call-up by the end of the season.

I agree, it makes pretty much no sense. Outside of Brookbank who is not ready or useful for consistant play (god forbid one of our d-men goes down), I don't see any injury depth anymore. Slegr was the perfect guy for this position and signed on with the Canucks realizing he'd be splitting time.

Why trade him?

This could be the precursor to a bigger deal... Burke has to do something to get this team kick started.

I sure hope so. However, this is what everyone said when Warriner was traded last season, and BB brought in...Brad May

What is his salary/contract status??

I wanted the Bruins to pick Slegr up BIG TIME at the deadline 2 years ago. I know that he still has a pretty good shot, I was just wondering whether he has lost a step over the last couples of seasons?

1-year 800 000 I beleive. He has a deadly shot and he skates pretty well, couldn't really comment on whether he has slown down or not...

He signed for $800,000 for one year in the offseason, so the Bruins will pay him about $400,000 for the rest of this year. After that he's an unrestricted free agent.

In my opinion he's looked VERY solid and reliable in the games he's played for the Canucks this season. Which is why I don't understand this move.

He is the ideal depth defensemen, good for a solid bottom pairing. His shot is still hard, but now it's lower and in my opinion more accurate.

A good addition to the Bruins blueline I would think. His salary is fairly low, somewhere around the $800,000 mark I believe.

i don't understand this move at all... my only guess is that it's so that they have room for Brookbank so they don't lose him again on waivers. Slegr was a GREAT depth defensemen, and this will hurt. not to mention he's one of only 2 players we have that have won a cup.

hope he gets some icetime in Boston. good luck Jiri.

I too don't get the move at all. But Boston got a good D-man. I hope non of our D-men go down at all for the rest of the season. Eatkins, Obsut, Baumgartner, Griener....Brookbank are potential 7th defencemen...oh boy. i hope there is a trade down the line.
but best of luck to Slegr!

...i think the conspiracy has started. Burke is going to slowly trade vancouver to boston and take the boston GM job in the summer time. 2morrow it will be Naslund for futures, then bert.
sorry had to talk about the Boston/Burke connection.

to be fair, he was injured for most of the playoffs and only played the final game of the championship, so there isn't much cup experience under his belt

Interesting how (judging from the threads on their respective forums) both fans think this is a signal of a bigger deal.....

He has one of the harder slapshots in the league, problem was (especially in '94) it woudl'nt be anywhere near the net.

Lately this year though, its hard and most importantly *accurate*. Damnit, I was hoping Slegr would replace Malik ... how can we ship off a + d-man who's had at least a point in 4 - 5 games played ?

I'm Angry ... Burke better have a good reason for this

Not only was it a classy move by Burke, it was perfectly logical. You don't pay a guy close to a million a year to sit in the press box. For those who said "he should have been playing more," I ask you, in place of whom? Do you really think swapping 6th D-men was going to make this Canucks team 1st in the conference instead of 2nd? Puh-leeze, this isn't Bobby Orr we're talking about.
