OT: More talk of expansion (Vegas still in the picture)

Quote:
"For years, speculation filtered through North America about the NHL eventually placing the first major professional sports franchise in Las Vegas. But for years, they were mostly just rumors. Now, all that drivel is starting to look more like reality."

"Harrah’s Entertainment Inc., recently announced plans to build a 20,000-seat arena worth $400 million in Vegas with plans to someday land an NHL or NBA franchise. The city doesn’t look like a good candidate for an NBA team, not with the league still reeling over the betting scandal involving former referee Tim Donaghy. The NHL makes more sense, especially with movie mogul Jerry Bruckheimer among the possible investors."

Vegas would be better off with a MLS team than a NHL club.

As a new Vegas resident (ex-NYer) and a huge hockey fan, I could only hope and pray that we can attract an NHL club. The opportunity may actually be greater than known. Las vegas is constructing two arenas, less then ten miles apart, both capable of handling an NHL or NBA team. The one being built by the city is within walking distance to my work...wouldn't that be nice!!! The only drawback, is that the Rangers won't come to town often enough.

They need to subtract some teams not add, if anything I hope they move a team there, not a totally new team.

They're going to add 2 more teams to make schedule balancing easier, everyone knows this. Easier to work with 8 of 4 or 4 of 8 than 6 of 5.

Can't stand another expansion.

Only makes the level of the game lower IMO.

You have guys like Pock, Strudwick and Hutchinson for example - all these fringe players given regular jobs in the NHL, not to mention guys like Brashear and Simon if you aren't into that aspect of the game. Where are we headed to 40 teams with AHL level 3rd and 4th lines????

Contraction is the way to go, but that is the furthest thing from reality when Bettman runs the show.

As Bettman continues to flush this league down the toilet. We need LESS teams not more.....why thin out the talent so much?

Not a fan of more teams, although the team name possibilities are fun to think about. Las Vegas Aces has a nice ring to it, though it reminds me of a minor league team name.

If one of Nashville, Florida, or Tampa Bay aren't moving there, I'm won't be too happy about a team in Vegas.

I'll believe it when I see it.

And by the way, what in God's name is Las Vegas thinking? TWO arenas planned?

Isn't one good enough for that city? That's absurd. I know New York City is a different animal as far as arenas and stadiums are concerned (notably the Mets and Yankees), but two arenas for Las Vegas makes absolutely no sense. What's going to happen when one or both venues don't make enough money? Then what?

To give you a little 411 on the politics involved (in a nutshell).

Mayor wants arena (mayor is a major league moron).

City fights him over arena (other areas that need to be addressed first).

Mayor's arena plan gets delayed.

Casino swoops in so that they can maintain their hold on ruling city.

Mayor angry, as this trumps his arena/downtown revitilization plan.

Prediction: Harrah's builds arena, mayor concedes arena battle and saves by working on project.

Major transporation nightmare becomes a reality because city has MAJOR transportation issues.

I think the NHL would work in LAs Vegas. Some people believe sports can't thrive here and that the city is not a sports town. I disagree. I think the problem is that LV has a lot of people who moved here from big league markets. This isn't like other markets where you have a native base and a regional base. Most people here have no history with the market. They know what they had and they want it in Vegas. If they grew up with the Dodgers, Cubs or Yankees, they don't care about minor league baseball.

If they grew up Bruins, Flyers or Rangers fan, they don't care about the ECHL.

Same with football, same with basketball.

LV will get a hockey team. My guess is the 2010-2011 season.

My guess is I'll never be around to see it. As technology improves, it's easier and easier for me to telecommute. By the time hockey comes to Vegas, I'll be in Southern Utah on a ranch with my wife and kid(s) and my motorcycles and some horses.

Same here, except I don't know that Vegas has the fans to support an NHL team. Of course I would, but I don't know of too many others that like hockey. I think the best thing to do would be to move the Rangers here. Hey can't I dream?

well said.

There's a saying: Get your own house in order first.

Lets get the current NHL back to a very good product and then thik about expansion. im all for 32 teams and seeign as much hockey as possible, but i think we need more teams in Canada (and not Vegas) and we need to sort out the poorly run and poorly attended current franchises before we get bigger.

Expansion shouldnt be close right now. No more teams for 10 years minimum.

Relocate Nashville to Canada, maybe even a poorly attended club like Carolina or someone else to Canada too. their 6 teams provide 30% of the revenue for the league sothey league as a whole would benefit from more teams north.

Im all for Jim baisaille getting a franchise North.

Seriously, I was out there for my B-day in June and we took cabs everywhere. The freakin cabs take your money faster than a dam slot machine man.

They need to build a mini subway or have more buses or something.

Vegas maintaining a good ice surface?? Now that's a challenge in itself...

a team in vegas is destined to fail. just because alot of people go there on vacation does not mean it can sustain a sports team. if i was on vacation in vegas seeing a hockey game is very low on my list of things to do. right below giving myself iodine poisoning by eating 5lbs of shrimp cocktail at a buffet

the league should expand ...in canada. There are three cities that would kill for a team right now. Quebec, Winnipeg, and Hamilton. and unlike here those teams would make money.

Well the joke with the Citizens Area Transit system (CAT Bus) is that it should be "Can't Arrive There."

Vegas is very much like a mini-LA in the sense that if you don't drive, you don't go anywhere.

What's disappointing about the city is that it's new so there should have been better planned then it is. It's not like NY which had is an older city and therefore harder to change.

Vegas' biggest problem though is the good ol' boy network who are now seriously out of their league as the city approaches two-million residents.

As for the belief that sports will fail, I'm not totally sold on that. The city has a good population size and a lot of people from major cities. But that's the catch, MAJOR cities. These people aren't interested in minor league sports or soccer or arena football or the XFL or anything like that.

Vegas has never really been a soccer city, nor is the weather particularly suited for the sport.

I think Hockey and Basketball would work here right now. I think Baseball and football are a few years away.

Soccer is not even really on the radar. And they'd have to build a domed stadium first because I can't see players running around the field when it's 115 degrees here.

Unfortunatly without a strong following, that's a mighty big risk for someone.

It's a problem our Triple A team runs into as well. Day games start at like 10 in the morning.

I just don't think there's enough of a demand here that they'd give us a franchise over another city.
