Trade for a two-way defenseman?

My two cents:

I like the way the team is going. We are getting better. It's obvious. But... I think Gainey has to get off his can and make a big move.

I know people are going to say we need a scorer. But I think if we had a legitimate top 4 guy to pair with Hamrlik, we could open up our system a bit more.

I know it will never happen, but this is what I think they should do. But I doubt Gainey/Carbo, two career defensive players (not to mention Jarvis), are even thinking in that direction.

We have a lot of young skill guys, but they don't have the proper support imo.

We also need another player who can make a play. Someone with vision. All we have is Koivu.

The problem is, I don't think we have any real strengths to deal from. We just aren't good enough yet to have that surplus. And really good defensemen are seldom available, let alone cheap. Therefore, by using Brisebois or Streit (or even Bouillon when he's at his absolute best) as an internal patch on the wished-for #4 guy, we're at least not opening up the other gaping holes in our lineup that trading for such a player would create.

And also, I think once Markov and Komisarek really get into their usual groove, it will make the D seem even stronger.

We're just not there yet... no need to try to "fine-tune" something that isn't even fully assembled yet.

Cause apparently when doing trade proposals with other teams their management is a pack of fools and ours are the smartest most manipulative guys in the game.

It's always a dumb trade... that's so one sided.
