What are your petpeeves with NHL?

Just curious as to what's ticking people off about hockey right now. Can be anything...doesn't have to be Sens-related (because really, what could we complain about regarding our team )

For me:

1) This whole Niedermayer/Selanne "are we retiring/are we coming back" crap. Seriously, **** or get off the pot. If I was an Anaheim fan, regardless of the Stanley Cup win, I'd be pissed off with the way these guys are leaving the team in the dark. They had all summer to make a decision. If you're done with hockey, fine. But the beating around the bush is a disgrace.

2) I know I should be used to this by now, but the Leafs-centric media just blows my mind. The Sens are playing hotter than ever, Alfie notches a couple of goals in his 800th game, and they get a minor soundbite on most sports shows. The Leafs are mediocre, lost a snoozefest game to the Bruins, and somehow it's important. Secondly, I feel bad for their goalies. I actually like Raycroft - on the right team, he could bounce back. I hope Detroit picks him up someday and shows Leaf nation what he's capable of behind a competent defense.

3) Tv time outs. I know the NHL is milking the sport for everying advertising dollar that can be mustered, but seriously, I think there were 3 tv time outs in one period during the Ottawa-Buffalo game I watched last night. I think two timeouts per period is more than enough. I want to watch a hockey game - not a GM add. Sidenote: Dear General Motors, if you want people to start buying your vehicles again, recognize that gas prices are a buck a litre and nobody wants to spend 80 clams on your ****** trucks to get half a tank of gas.

4) The whole "growing the game in the U.S." mentality. Bettman, you tried...and failed. Hockey isn't, and probably won't ever be sustainable in small-market U.S. cities. Don't fight it, deal with it. If a team will work in Hamilton and be a profitable endeavour, put a team there. Time to swallow your pride.

5) And my only Sens-related point, which has nothing to do with the team, and moreso the fans: stop whining about Emery not getting a shot at the number one. Gerber is holding the fort - why mess with the formula. Gerbs was patient last year when we shelved him for a hot Emery. I like both goalies, but you just don't mess with a streak. A lot of people were a bit hard on Gerber for his slow start last year, but he heated up during the second half of last season, and he's kicking ass now. I'm in no hurry to get rid of him.

End rant.

For me, it's the same old tired storey of inconsistant officiating. Doesn't seem to matter what game I watch, I am never feeling a warm fuzzy about the on ice officials by the end of the game. Seems there are phantom calls, missed calls, and made up calls. More consistancey would be nice.

The bonus point

Number of teams > Number of strong markets

The reffing... it's like they do whatever they can to get the team that's behind back into the game.

There are 3 TV timeouts in every period of every game.

I hate the talk about scoring being down and the mild push towards bigger nets. People go crazy over goals because they are hard to get. You could make the nets 20 feet wide and there would be 200 goals a game but they would all suck.

People don't want more goals they want more scoring chances. It's exciting when a goalie makes a big save, too. Anyone who watched the Ottawa Montreal game last Saturday knows low scoring games can be exciting as long as there are chances.

More scoring...there are enough blowouts each year. We don't need MORE.

Puck over the glass in the defensive zone penalty. I don't think I've seen one instance of this where it was intentional.

Bettman only does what the owners want. Everything is voted on, he is just the figure head.

that we're always tailoring the NHL to try and get the idiot americans to like it (with no guarantee that it will work, and with no regard for what the current fans think of the changes).

The Niedermayer saga. It's pretty clear to me that he's going to have an epiphany and come back once he has lost enough of his contract to fit under their cap comfortably. So, Anaheim will have a stacked team for another cup run. It's not fair to any other teams.

Might not be fair but it is genius is Burke pulls that off and gets Selanne to return.

Bosses always have the last words. He uses his rights, and his weight. And no I'm not saying Bettman is fat. There are two thing I don't like right now :

1- NHL even thinking about expanding in Europe.
2- NHL is convinced they can do well in the U.S. by moving a team to another major U.S city or to add teams.

Owners vote on that, it's not Bettmans decision.

it needs no touch icing. how often does a guy actually beat the icing? it'll speed up the game a bit and the races for the puck really can be dangerous.

And the delay of game penalty (puck over the glass). ughhhh

Not enough Canadian vs Canadian games (west vs east). This schedule is just aweful for Canadian hockey fans ( ie hockey fans who love when 2 hockey teams from Canada go head to head).

Piss poor officiating of late. It use to be (in the old NHL) that we could watch a game and have 2 or maybe 3 "WTH was that call"s a game. Now I'm finding its that many a period usually. I'm not just talking against the Sens I mean EVERY team. Just no consistancy, no Ref seems to know what a penalty is anymore.

Too many divisional games. Five or even six is good enough.

The East vs West games is a big one for me too.

Horrible reffing drives me insane, I could do a better job then some of them.

NTC or NMC to players who dont deserve them, meh not a big one, but its still annoying
