For interest: Prior to making the Capitals full time, Sutherby spent plenty of time playing for Portland, who at that time was Washington's affiliate.

I wonder if Burke picked him up to be a 4th line center with a possible move on Marchant or MacDonald coming soon.

He was a first round pick (#26 overall) in the draft 2000, the guy has potential.

And Carlyle knows Sutherby from his days behind the bench for the Caps as an Assistant as well.

He's worth a second, but Bryzgalov has no trade value. Interesting.

Good move, though. Sutherby can contribute to this team. Moreso than a few of the NHL-unready forwards that have gotten 4th line duties this past month.

Exactly what I was thinking, that Marchant is now gone because of this. So a lead up to another deal.

I am not so sure though. With Selanne gone I just do not get the feeling McDonald is fitting well in the Ducks roster from a playing style standpoint, we are just not set up for his small quick style of play. McDonald will also be more likely to get a bigger return if traded for another goal scorer.

I really like both Marchant and McDonald. Marchant is probably the smartest most versatile player the Ducks have and I have been a fan of McDonald for a long time. I would hate to see either one go, but I feel it is coming.

I like this trade. From what i've read on Sutherby, he's a hard working versatile player.

Who else knows anything about Sutherby? What can he bring to this team? Stengths/weaknesses?

Burke building part II. In few weeks we'll see Marchant gone. Sutherby will take his role and he is 1,7 million cheaper replacement.

thought some here might want to read this...from the Caps senior writer blog (employee of the Caps)

http://dumpnchase.wordpress.com/2007...-act/#comments

also, Carlyle is familiar with Sutherby from his two seasons with the Caps

Good luck to Sutherby with the Ducks

I suspect this means we'll see Carter back to Portland and when Bertuzzi returns Miller will be sent back too.

Sutherby is a former Pirate who played with an edge. He's a good solid versatile player who can put up some points and play a physical game. He's weakness would be on the defensive side of the puck, but he's not shy about crashing the net. He'll be slotted for a winger position because the Ducks have a tendency to have more centers because they feel it's easier to convert a center to wing then the other way around.

I don't want to see Miller sent back to portland. I'm not sure how much of an upgrade this is. The only way I like this deal and don't see it as a waste of precious cap space is if we trade Marchant soon.

and I STILL don't understand how Bryzgalov goes on waivers, and sutherby gets a 2nd.

I hope this is all part of some masterful plan by burke that will make sense later.

You know who was picked before Sutherby by us? Smirnov. That's a good sign...

My impression of him is he's essentially what Brad May is now, but slightly more versatile. Although I haven't seen much of him so I could be way off. I'd have preferred Pettinger from the Caps (as was rumored earlier and who incidentally was drafted in the same draft, but as an overager).

Anyone know how many contracts we're at now? Were we at 49 before all these moves? So with the 2 for 1 trade, waiving Bryz, and getting Sutherby we should be at 48 now?

All I can say is I hope he works out better than the last guy we got from the Caps for a 2nd round pick. And I'd bet there's more to come.

And I feel like he's worth more a 3rd than a 2nd. Even if it's Edmonton's 3rd in 08 and not ours in 09.

As long as no one knows what is [U]really[U] happening, lets just throw some more fuel on the fire:

1. Marchant and Mac will be traded? You really think both of them?
What if Selanne returns? No Mac to feed Teemu.

2. Bertuzzi will retire or be traded to make room for Selanne. But the question is, who wants all these high priced players.

Mac at 3 something, Marchant at 2 something and Bert at some ungodly amount?

Are they that easy to get rid of? Can't get a bag of pucks for Bryz but yet we can dump all these players (kidding about Bert) just like that? How?

Ducks pick up Brian Sutherby

The Anaheim Ducks announced today that they have acquired Brian Sutherby from The Washington capitols in exchange for Anaheims 2nd round draft pick.

I thought the SAME thing!

Im reading that article thinking "what the HELL has this guy ever done" and then I see that he's 6-3 and weighs 215 pounds!

Bertuzzi gonna get some competition? Looking for a new Penner maybe? Burke sure seems to be good at finding diamonds in the rough and polishing them up.

Congrats Ducks fans. Sutherby isn't the most talented guy out there, but he he's got tons of heart. He was extremely popular with the players in the Caps' locker room.

Good trade. Burke is good at finding these so called diamond in the roughs that are tough and big.

Looking forward to seeing him.
