I'd also like to point out that the contracts handed out are long-term deals. If Richards & Carter sign for short-term, the amount of cash they're going to be getting will be significantly less.

I'm not sure it's realistic to expect short term deals for Carter or Richards at this point, though. If their agents notice the trends, they would be foolish to allow them to sign a short term deal, as a team out there would definitely put out a long term deal for either player after the season

I think Richards is going to sign Long term( 6yrs -25 mill) and Carter short term, As long as we get Ritchie locked up, if someone wants to offer Carter 5 million at years end, let him walk.

I don't think I want to do short-term with Richards, unless he gets unreasonable. Even if we slightly overpay now we will probably be happy in 2-3 year. With this as a precedent we might have to go short-term with Carter though, I don't think we want to pay him as close to as much as he could be worth without knowing he is going to get there, and I don't really see why he would sign for too much less.

My concern with handing Richards a big contract is what if this is his best year? He pots 85-90 points and never again tops 70? Would you be happy with him having a cap hit similar to Gagnes?

Gagne's topped 70 points once in his career. Provided Richards continues developing defensively, and takes on the role of captain once Gator steps aside, I'd have no problem giving him a similar deal.

Absolutely....and I seriously doubt we're seeing the best of Mike Richards yet. Although he may never be a consistent 80-90 pt guy, he brings the complete package and that package should only improve...the point per game number is gravy. He'll be well worth the contract because he can do so many different things. I'll sleep much better when he's locked up.

Agreed, if Flyer fans had to choose between locking up Richards or Carter, it would be Richards hands down. The way contracts are being handed out, I'm hoping for an announcement in the next month that the Flyers have signed Mike Richards to a long-term contract. As for Carter, I think he might be ending up as the odd man out especially with Claude Giroux coming up. If the Flyers end up paying $5 million per season over 5 or 6 years for Richards, then Carter might want the same. If that's the case then he might be on his way out. Hopefully Holmgren will get off his butt and sign these young players now before the end of the season.

that is quite a hefty contract. kinda scary really.

regarding our guys....maybe its just me, but i really don't see carter as a flyer for the long term. i think he will move on to 'bigger and better things'. richards on the other hand, i do see sticking around for a long time. maybe i'm being niave, but i'm not sure if he would just leave for money....now i know everyone has their price, BUT, for some reason, i feel that as long as we offer him something respectable, he'll be sticking around. he seems to really enjoy playing here and i think it would take something extreme for him to just peace out. thoughts?

Richards is a very unselfish, team-first player, I don't think re-signing him to a reasonable contract is going to be an issue.

wow, it's going to be interesting to see how some of these future deals work out. Homer has his work cut out for him.
