For him it is. It ahppened the past two years after the offersheets started rolling out.

Those two players should be the priority right now, not Ovechkin. #8 isn't going anywhere, the Caps will match anything.

Its those two young defensman who are going to have their value raised in the summer. I can easily see a team offering Green a 3.2-3.5 million per offer sheet.
That would just be sick. If that happened, it would mean the cap is an utter failure. Green isn't even a complete NHL defender yet, he's just got crazy offensive upside.

The green light the other night removed his 6th goal from the sheet. Reastically, with Boudreau's confidence in the guy, Green could score 15 to 20 this season. Complete or not, that would draw some attention. How many goals did Penner score last season?

Ryan Whitney - 6 Years $4 million
Matt Carle - 4 Years about $3.4 million per
Brett Burns - 4 years about $3.5 million per

Sadly, the market's already there.

yep

The Caps should be able to sign Green for less. But if he does hit the RFA market this summer it wouldn't surprise me at all.

A good young defensman like Green for a 1st, 2nd and 3rd rd pick. If I was a GM and I had a late 1st rounder I would make an offer.

Whitney has a 59 point season to his name.

Carle has a 42 point season to his name.

Burns has been a mainstay in that lineup (a good lineup for that matter) for 2 years, going on 3.

Green has less games, less points, and less success playing at just staying in the lineup in a much much worse team. Not knocking Green, but he's not producing at the same clip as the guys you mentioned.

I think I picked Green to score 15 in the preseason. Penner scored 29 in his first full season last year. Looks like he's gonna score 15 or so this year though.

I think Ovechkin may be the Yzerman of the Caps. Similar situation to start the careers for sure.
