Longest time/most series played without being swept?

I was thinking the other day, about the Leafs' playoff record, and I noticed that there are two outcomes they have not experienced since 1993. They have not won in 5 games, and they have not lost in 4. Then I got to thinking, how long has it actually been since they were swept?

From 1993-to the present I know inside and out, there were no sweeps.
In 1992 they missed the playoffs.
In 1991 they missed the playoffs.
In 1990 they lost in 5 games.
In 1989 they missed the playoffs.
In 1988 they lost in 6 games.
In 1987 they played 13 games and made it to the 2nd round, so they played either 6 or 7 in round 2.
In 1986 they swept a top seed in round 1 3-0, and I think they took the 2nd seed to 7 games.
In 1985 they missed the playoffs (this is how they got Clark)
In 1984 they missed the playoffs (got Iafrate this way)
In 1983, it appears they played just 4 games but the first round was best of 5 at the time.
In 1982, they missed the playoffs.
In 1981, they were swept in the first round (player stats indicate they played just 3 games)

So, that is a total of 26 seasons and 26 series without being swept.

Is it possible that this is some kind of a record?

Here are some teams that I know for sure have been swept at least once in recent years, or have not played 26 years/series to qualify:
Anaheim, Atlanta, Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, Colorado, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Edmonton, Florida, Minnesota, Montreal, Nashville, NY Rangers, Ottawa, Philadelphia, San Jose, Tampa Bay, Vancouver, Washington.

That leaves Calgary, Carolina, Los Angeles, New Jersey, NY Islanders, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, St. Louis.

I don't know every team's history as well as I know the Leafs. How long has it been since these teams have been swept? Do the Leafs have the current record, or maybe even the all-time record?

Whalers got swept in round 1 by Habs in '89, so Canes are out.

That I know off hand:

Calgary was swept in '88 by Edmonton and '96 by Chicago, so they're out.
Los Angeles was swept by St. Louis in '98, and I think by Detroit in '00 as well.
NY Islanders were obliterated by the Rangers in the first round in '94.
Winnipeg was swept on more than one occasion by the Oilers, so Phoenix is out.
St. Louis was swept by Dallas in '94.

So that leaves New Jersey and Pittsburgh as your remaining candidates.

Are you sure about Winnipeg? Looking at the player stats for Numminen and Hawerchuk, it appears the Jets always played more than 4 games. That's not to say they culdn't have won one series and then got swept, but we all know their history with regards to winning even one series...

1982-83: Edmonton swept Winnipeg 3-0 in round 1
1983-84: Edmonton swept Winnipeg 3-0 in round 1
1984-85: Edmonton swept Winnipeg 4-0 in round 2
1986-87: Edmonton swept Winnipeg 4-0 in round 2

1985 and 1987 are the only years in which the Winnipeg/Phoenix franchise has won a playoff series. They defeated Calgary both times if I'm not mistaken.

That's got me thinking about another record: What's the highest number of times one team has swept the same team, consecutively or overall? For consecutively, those four in a row surely have to be a record. Winnipeg finally got one back on Edmonton in 1988, losing 4-1 in the first round. In 1990 they built a 3-1 series lead only to see Edmonton come storming back to win in 7.

Alright, I think I've found the answer:

As far as I can tell, the New Jersey franchise has the record. The only time they have ever been swept was as the Colorado Rockies (yes, the Rockies actually made the playoffs!). In the 1978 post-season, Philadelphia dismissed them in the opening round 2-0, in one of those best-of-three series.

A more legitimate sweep would be that of Pittsburgh. They were last swept in the 1979 playoffs, 4-0 by Boston in round 2.

So it appears those are the two teams that have gone longer than Toronto without being swept, assuming all those other ones you listed in the original post are correct (I didn't check).

Interesting topic seventieslord, one of those quirky things you never hear mentioned or listed anywhere.
