Hats Off To Sather

You got to hand it to Sather when you compare the forwards he had two years with the forwards we got today, under the same salary cap everyone else is operating under. Ortmeyer and Dominick Moore have yet to score. Jason Ward has three goals as does Rucinsky. Nylander has seven goals but is dead last in the league in plus-minus. Rucchin looks to be finished with a concussion. Plus he got rid of all the dead wood on defence and replaced them with blue-chip youngsters like Girardi and Staal and a solid vet in Mara. I was among the mob calling for Sather's head three years ago but if he doesn't get credit for building a really competitive team, I don't know who does.

My hat is off for now. If he dares to sign Mara or Malik or Strudwick in the off season, my hat goes back on.

He's really done a stunning job. He obviously is a better GM with a cap than w/o. Reliving the Oil days a little perhaps.

When you cant just literally buy up marquee players at will , you have to really have a good farm system AND a quality AHL team to teach the system.

The Hartford staff should get a lot of credit too. These kids can really contribute.

The Jagr deal looks like genius now, and he got lucky finding Lundqvist.

Sathers done a great deal to turn this franchise around and make it top to bottom a respectable team.

In comparrison to the clusterf that is the Knicks, Slats looks like Midas

Strudwick is looking like a great sign right now. He is cheap and versatile. He is also tough. This team needs some toughness.

Yea, with the exception of Cullen, and maybe Sykora, all of the players we lost or let go in recent years turned out to be replaced by even better talents.

Out:
Dominic Moore
Adam Hall
Sandish Ozolinsh
Brad Isbister
Jason Ward
Pascal Dupuis
Aaron Ward
Steve Rucchin
Tom Poti
Martin Rucinsky
Petr Sykora
Jason Krog
Ville Nieminen
Jed Ortmeyer
Karel Rachunek
Kevin Weekes
Michael Nylander

In:
Avery
Staal
Girardi
Drury
Gomez
Mara
Dubinsky
Shanahan
Orr
Callahan
Valiquette

I'd like to agree with you here, but Sather will have a lot of work to do this summer, specifically on the blueline.. and we can't expect there to be a significant upgrade made in each roster spot. That said, if any one of those guys stays, but takes less money, I wouldn't complain, as they are capable of being 4th/5th/6th dmen.

You know the only real flop there is Ozo, and I certainly wouldnt diss Sather for making that move.

Ozo in theory has/had a big upside.

An upside they are still looking for really.....So hard to find that offensive D man w/o giving up ALOT in return.

Sathers been great about NOT dealing away the youth

If you've kept up on the prospects thread he's got a long way to go... but the talent is definitely there.

You know we dont even know, have clue, as to all the deals Sather DIDNT make.

He took that fishing trip on Peca......

He also offered Elias a huge deal and forced Lou to match, thus making it impossible to sign Gomez a year later even if they wanted. Probably pushed Rafalski out too...

He knew the Devils were pinched

He's still young.......and the talent.

Getting him for a guy who spent 15 minutes here is pretty good. Or getting him for Adam Hall is pretty good, either way you look at it.

How freaky is that? 20 minutes after you make this thread, Jed buries one!

Good for Orts. He touched off a big comeback for Nashville.

Ozolinsh definitely was a bummer. But he's playing like the old Ozolinsh for San Jose. He said himself there he wasn't ready mentally to play hockey when he came to New York. Who's to know? I'm not saying that Sather hasn't made mistakes, but in the cap era there are only so many big ticket players you can hang on to. Should he have tried to hang on to Sykora and Cullen? I prefer Gomez and Drury. Should he have tried to land a big boomer from the blueline like Souray? Maybe it will still be possible at the trading deadline if that lack is still felt.

Sather really has turned things around. I really need the one bad taste in my mouth, the Avery negotiation, to be cleared up with a long term deal. If Avery walks in the off season its a very big mistake.

He has done a good job of turning talent over in recent years.

Probably because he's the highest paid Ranger defenseman, and he's close to being rotated in and out of the lineup as 6th D.

I don't mind him, but if there's a way Strudwick can keep up the solid play, Baranka can get a shot, or another cheaper defenseman can be obtained via trade...I'd rather the team have the extra 2-2.5 mil or so for a move leading up to the deadline.

I'd agree only if they didn't bring in a player with a similar game.

As long as you replace what makes Avery so unique to the team, I could care less who plays for the NYR in that spot. Would you mind if Tucker or Neil (just grabbing quick names) took Avery's slot?

I only say this because we're developing a team that will not need to run by favorites or names because of the magnitude and quantity of talent on the cusp of coming through the system.

Just because he's Avery doesn't mean we need to bend over backwards to appease him.

Sather wasn't the GM all 7 years we missed the playoffes.
He has managed to build a stanley cup contender and prepare for the future.
The most important thing left to do is re-sign Lundqvist.

I dunno, call me crazy, but watching the team stink all those years, makes winning now seem so much more precious.

Grow up.If Neil Smith had any balls,he would have traded Leetch(along with Mike Richter and Adam Graves)before giving him the big contract in 1999 with the complete NTC.Once Sather got Leetch to agree to a new contract in 1993 w/o a NTC,Slats made the decision which needed to be made
