New rumors: I'm in line to be the HC, and McPhee might get the boot

ESPN... need an insider account: http://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/features/rumors

Former Capitals captain Dale Hunter, presently coaching junior club London in the Ontario Hockey League, might eventually get the Washington coaching job if GM George McPhee can keep his job, according to the Ottawa Sun.

Many observers expect McPhee to follow recently fired coach Glen Hanlon out the door in Washington by season's end and the Sun mentioned Doug Armstrong, recently fired by the Stars, as a possible replacement.

Goes on to talk about how Leonsis has already initiated a search for a new GM and that McPhee's other potential replacements could be Brian Lawton (strong candidate), Pierre McGuire (good hockey guy) and an obligatory mention of Mad Mike Milbury (oh please god no!).

If Milbury becomes the Caps GM, I will simultaneously vomit and have a heart attack. I do like McGuire though. He's one of the only guys outside the organization that gives the Caps any respect. It's always seemed like he's pulled for the Caps.

Like a fine wine, the thoughts of GMGM leaving don't get worse with age.

Yeah... that's the only reason I actually posted it. Kind of suprised me that I didn't see it on here.

It was in a thread where the Garrioch link came up and was discussed in detail there. I'll look around and will merge/rename thread if I can find it.

Well, there you have a reason why Bruce is Interm. IF there is a good chance of a new GM and a need to change the coach before that, locking in a new coach hired by the outgoing GM isn't a smooth move.

I'm intriqued by the mention of Pierre Macguire.

Who knows how he'd be as a GM, but he knows his stuff and has been on the caps bandwagon for awhile.

If it's Mad Mike then it's confirmed: Ted joins Angelos and Snyder as two of the worst sports owners in the country. The DC area is fortunate enough to have all 3 of them.

if milbury gets the gig, i might find a new team. that guy makes only slightly worse hockey decisions than the majority of message board posters.

Armstrong & Macguire are both horrible choices, however anyone will do better than McPhee, he's that bad.

I have espn insider, and dont use it for hockey. Everything on insider is old news. TSN and THN much better for hockey news.

In the title of the thread you put "I'm in line to be the HC."

So are you Dale Hunter?

Why are some so willing to hand over the reins to Hunter yet think Boudreau was a horrible choice due to lack of NHL experience?

Maybe because Hunter played for us for so many years. I'm happy with Boudreau and think he is the right man for the job.

Every coach has to start somewhere.

True ---- and I am glad Boudreau is getting the chance to show his stuff in the NHL --- the guy has won at every level. I loved watching his Bears play (they play some great hockey, very up tempo, physical, aggessive) and would be in heaven if the Caps can emulate that style.

agreed, this team has done a lot of crazy **** in my 8 years of fandom that could have made me pull the plug but i've always remained optimistic...

if infact they made the switch to milbury then their motto under Leonsis would continue to reign true:

"one step forward, two steps back"

Mark Hunter wouldn't be a bad GM if the Caps want to go that route if Hunter becomes head coach...he's the big reason behind London's success from what I've heard

IMO Dale Hunter is more of a gamble than BB at the moment. Don't get me wrong the 'fan' in me loves the thought of Hunter as the caps coach. I GM decides to go with a different coach this off season I would anticipate he would go with a veteran NHL coach or at least a long time assistant.

Ha! They have to steal unfounded crud from Garrioch a week after it shows up in print in order to justify people paying for the "insider" service. I don't recall Garrioch mentioning Hunter though (could be wrong) so I guess they just decided to throw that one in there. I mean Hunter to the Caps is a pretty far out idea (sarcasm)- kinda the same sort of linear logic linkage they used (and everyone else) to have every disgruntled, underachieving, or available Russian hockey player in the world going to the Caps because, well you know - Semin and Ovechkin obviously equates to the Caps wanting every Russian they can get their hands on.

Next week on the 'insider'; Langway for coach, Bondra for GM, and a trade for Samsonov.

On the serious side;
I personally don't think it's Hunter's time yet.

And I agree, Mark Hunter has been the real wizard behind the curtain for London's success more than Dale. Not diminshing what Dale has done, but it's been the talent Mark has put in London that's really behind their success (talent that only he seems to be able to convince to come to the OHL, leading me to wonder if he doesn't show up at doorsteps with the foil on and drag guys like Kane and others away from their NTDP and college hockey comittments after everyone passed on them in the draft and the Knights use up late round picks on them).

My cousin plays for the London Knights, under Dale Hunter. Personally I don't think his coaching style would translate well from junior players to professionals.
