Offside Question

I have a question about a ruling on an Offside.

I was playing in a rec league tonight and was called offside. The forward bench was inside the offensive zone making line changes a little tricky. However, I was 100% in the bench, and the oncoming player was 100% onside.

The play was called offside because the gate was still open.

Should this have been called offside or not??

After going through the NHL Rulebook on offsides (http://www.nhl.com/hockeyu/rulebook/rule74.html) I didn't notice anything like that, but I skimmed it very fast.

Maybe just a mistaken call by an amateur ref.

Did the guy come over the boards and not through the gate, and if so, did he hop over the boards outside the line?

the ref mustve thought the guy who jumped over the boards went offsides because he saw the open gate

I believe that if the guy coming off is offside, and the guy comes over the boards onside, it's still an offside play.
