Flyers' Stevens on verge of new deal

By Rob Parent, rparent@delcotimes.com

VOORHEES, N.J. Now that a season skid is severely testing his coaching mettle, it seems the appropriate time for John Stevens to sign a contact extension.

Though Flyers officials wouldnt confirm an agreement has been finalized, the Daily Times has learned that Stevens is on the verge of signing a one-year contract extension worth $650,000, and it could become official as early as today.

The news isnt such a surprise, since it was learned last month that Stevens and Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren had been trying to hammer out a new agreement. What seemed surprising is that it took so long for him to do so. But Stevens shrugged it off just the same.

Ive loved every stage Ive had with this organization, Stevens said, referring to his time as Flyers prospect, Phantoms captain and head coach, and his current stint, which began in Oct. 2006 when Ken Hitchcock was fired. Im just thrilled to death.

A one-year extension would only take Stevens through next season, which matches the length of the contract Holmgren has as a G.M. These shorter-termed pacts for the hockey bosses seem to be part of a Comcast-Spectacor corporate culture change. But they dont seem to bother Stevens. When asked about the term of his extension, he related a recent conversation with another NHL coach who was talking about his own short shelf life.

He was saying that were all hired to be fired, Stevens said, but I dont look at it that way. I believe Ill be here a long time.

He added that not having a long-term contract as a coach, would never stop me from doing what Im doing, and from looking forward.
I told you all Stevens wasn't getting fired.

Since i'm not the best at expressing myself, I'm going to use a great actor of our time to express my sentiments.

If you read the rest of the article, it says Homer is ready to talk contract with Carter and RJ. Smith is going to the back burner then?

1 yr. at $650,000 isn't enough to make them think twice about firing him, if this team doesn't start playing better hockey.

Agreed. Nothing says "we like you as a coach but don't love you" like a one year deal.

Or the fact that he's signed for a long as Homer is. It makes business sense. Homer probably was allowed to extend him longer.

This literally means nothing, coaches can get fired at any time.

True, but Stevens isn't getting fired this season like half the boards wants him too. Just another case of overreaction by most people here.

A continued run like this will likely the spell the end of his reign here in Philadelphia. Guru, he could be fired at any time, like Storm said. If this 4 game losing streak extends to 8-10, I wouldn't be surprised to see a change made...

this skid continues much further and we may actually test that theory... i don't like Stevens, but I didn't/don't think he's getting canned in season without an extended losing streak.

1 yr 650K is a pathetic coach for a coach in the NHL... they canned Hitch on a multi-year multi-million dollar deal... a coach with far greater pedigree and success in this league. while it's nice insurance for Stevens, the deal itself means little for his long-term viability even this year.

If they had any thoughts of firing him shortly, they wouldn't of done this deal. Does it really make sense to sign him for next year and then fire him a week later. Use some common sense here people, he won't get fired this season.

It is now being comfirmed by Timmy P. as well.

really? i didn't realize playing and losing games was a completely different situation.

this year: 26.8 SOG (23rd), 32.7 SOGA (30th), -5.9 DIF
last year: 28.8 SOG (19th), 32.6 SOGA (27th), -3.8 DIF

admitting all the qualifiers people will throw at these statistics... those stats seem to show me that despite a VAST improvement in talent on this roster, Stevens has translated that into zero improvement as far as the team as a group is playing. they are finishing at a higher rate because the forwards are better, and the fact that Biron >>>>>>>>>> Nitty has led to an improved record. Stevens' team has improved due to talent... a good coach squeezes efficiency from the talent, Stevens isn't.
