It's part of an arrangement that I believe the NHL brokered when the Sabres came out of bankruptcy and Empire Sports Net folded. The Sabres produce the games, and MSG adds the graphics.

Sabres games over ride rangers games up here, I get the rangers if I switch to MSGHD or center ice.

At least it's hockey, as opposed to basketball.

And don't forget that MSG is a regional cable network.

The Buffalo Sabres have their own separate channel under the MSG "umbrella" of regional network coverage as a whole. They've got their broadcast territory in upstate New York. Some systems carry both the Rangers and Sabres depending on what part of the state and cable system you're in. For example, when I was up at Lake George for Thanksgiving weekend in 2006 (boy was it cold up there), I was able to watch BOTH a Rangers game on the primary MSG channel from NYC and a Sabres game against Toronto on the other MSG channel based in Buffalo.

The broadcast exceptions of course are no Sabres games on "MSG Buffalo" shown in the New York City broadcast area and no Rangers, Islanders or Devils games from "MSG NYC" or FSN New York in western New York State where the Sabres have their own broadcast territory.

Since 3 years ago when MSG took over broadcasting the Sabres after the upstate sports network folded because of the lockout.

The upstate network folded because its owner (who happened to be the Buffalo Sabres owner) went to jail.

By combing all 4 hockey markets together, MSG is able to provide more value to the sponsors and ad people than just 1 team alone, even if we are by birthright an original 6 team.
