Do you remember......

Do you remember all the excitement when Jagr came to the Caps.......?

just a shame it has worked out this way........I'm not one that thinks he has sucked....I didnt expect him to win scoring titles here......I did expect better though....anyway.....as it comes closer to the end of the Jagr era, I just wanted to reflect on what could have been......

Very thoughtful post. I actually remember where I was when I heard about Jagr. I was so excited to hear that the BEST player in the world was coming to my town. I didn't really know too much about him, other than his scoring titles. For once, hockey was big news in WSH, and all the major media outlets were buzzing. It almost felt like living in canada must be like. If it had worked out, Leonsis would have looked like a genius. I'm not really disappointed about Jagrs output, just his effort.

I was completely excited as well when the caps acquired Jagr. I didn't think he would win scoring titles but man what a coup it was. I give Leonsis the credit to roll the dice and trade for him and pay him all the money... granted in hindsight considering the economic future it wasn't the best thing to do. It was a gamble that failed but at least he was bold enough to try.

I was stunned, then a bit happy, then unhappy. A friend of mine was flat-out PISSED: "This is %_#(*&%#!!!!! The team doesn't need more soft players, they need some hard-*****!". He was right.

I was very happy

I'm a little pissed to see him go, but I can see the $$ ramifications. It's going to be a long time until we see a player of that skill level in a Caps uni again.

It's a sad day for DC hockey. Ted has ruined a team with a solid nucleus.

I had mixed feelings when he first came. I liked the fact that we now had a superstar that could take a team on his back and get them through a playoff series all by himself (he'd done it to us more than once). But I knew about all the baggage he had and the primma donna label he had been (justly) tagged with. I would have been MUCH happier had we gone out and traded for a Tinordi-like replacement.

I think the trade in and of itself was good. It was the unbelievable contract that Leonsis gave him that ruined it. I remember we weren't even through our first season with Jagr when there were rumblings at the trade deadline, when we needed another defenseman to push us over the top, that Leonsis didn't want to get a defenseman that cost much. So guys like McGillis and McLaren, both of whom were available at the time and would have REALLY helped this team, slipped through our fingers and into the hands of other teams.

The blame for the failure lies at the feet of Leonsis for paying Jagr so much. I don't hate him for it, because I know Leonsis means well. His heart seems to be in the right place, but he just makes the wrong decisions.
