Flyers-Rangers Preview
GAME: Philadelphia Flyers (22-11-10-5) at New York Rangers (18-18-7-4).

TIME: Thursday, 7:30 p.m. EST.
The Philadelphia Flyers has been devastated by injuries to their defense lately. They shouldn't expect any sympathy from the New York Rangers in that department.

Both teams will be forced to use makeshift defensive units when they meet Thursday at Madison Square Garden.

Philadelphia entered Tuesday's 4-1 home loss to Montreal without injured defensemen Eric Desjardins, Dennis Seidenberg and Marcus Ragnarsson. Desjardins will miss at least two months with a broken right forearm, Seidenberg is out at least three months with a broken left leg and Ragnarsson will be sidelined up to two weeks with a sprained left rotator cuff.

Those injuries forced Philadelphia to trade right wing Justin Williams to Carolina on Tuesday for defenseman Danny Markov, who played more than 25 minutes in his Flyers' debut.

Things got worse for the Flyers when another defenseman, Jim Vandermeer, separated his right shoulder late in the first period.

"It's a tough time for us right now," Philadelphia coach Ken Hitchcock said. "Regrouping is going to become important. I don't think we can lose sight of the fact that we were checked hard today and we didn't respond the way I would have liked."

The Rangers find themselves in a very similar situation after being swept by Boston in a home-and-home series, including a 4-1 home loss Tuesday.

New York was without three regular defensemen and could be missing all three again Thursday.

Darius Kasparaitis is out 10 to 12 weeks with a knee injury and Greg de Vries is expected to miss another two weeks with a sprained right knee. Tom Poti, scratched Tuesday with back spasms, could return Thursday.

"Anytime you've got three of your regular defensemen out of your lineup it's tough," Rangers captain Mark Messier said. "I don't think we can panic at this point."

Without Kasparaitis, de Vries and Poti, rookie Lawrence Nycholat made his NHL debut for the Rangers on Tuesday. New York also dressed Dale Purinton and Joel Bouchard, who have played sparingly this season.

While the Flyers are battling New Jersey for first place in the Atlantic Division, the Rangers are two points behind the New York Islanders for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

New York is 0-2-2 in its last four games and 3-5-2-1 this month.

***********************

Lindros playing like the best Ranger right now, and he has a tendency to hurt us on the scoresheet. We need to maintain him and the rest of the Rags to be successful tonight. We always play the Rangers close so I don't see how this game would be any different. one thing's for sure, we need to start getting points again. Time to turn over a new leaf, we've lost Williams, we miss him, but there ain't nothing we can do to bring him back......we now have Markov who whopefully will be a good piece in this Philadelphia puzzle.

Flyers 3 (Gagné, Roenick, Recchi)
Rangers 2 (Lindros, Simon)

Should be an intense game, as the Rag$ just lost a home & home to the Bruins.
We need to get the 2 points, and not lose another defenseman!

Thsi should be a good game for us. The Rags play a similar game to the Leafs, but not as well.

Also missing de Vries and Kaspar should allow us to dominate in front of their net like we do with the Leafs.

Flyers will come out determined tonight and put in a good effort

Desjardins, Ragnarsson, Vandermeer, Seidenberg, Lapointe all out.
Handzus is questionable with sore ribs, my guess is he'll play.

Even without Zeus and Lapoint, we are ok at center with JR, Comrie, Primeau and Sharp. My guess is that once Desjardins, Ragnarsson, and Vandermeer are back we have so much depth at C and D, we are going to need to make a package deal to get a goaltender.

Just please, please, please find a way to get rid of Bundy... I am so tired of watching that guy play. Years and years of soft play and failed clears and blocked shots. The guy couldn't break glass with his slapshot BECAUSE IT'S ALWAYS BLOCKED!!!!

Dog Fight Tonight.
We need a win in a big way.
If Brashear comes out unmotivated again tonight like against Montreal I will be furious.

Flyers 4
Rangers 1

Gags, Sami, Amonte and KJ - Markov gets his first Philly point

I hope your right. Just seems like these hyped division rival games turn into snooze fests.
88 has been playing like his old self recently, and hopefully our patchwork D is up to the challenge.
We need 2 points badly tonite, and hopefully Hitch has drilled this into the players heads!

these two teams rarely tie, it'll be a one goal game either way..
Here's hoping Gagné nets the winner. I think the Williams trade made him realize that he is just as expendable as anyone on this team, thus motivating him to be the coveted winger we expected.

I think this game depends on Lindros. If he tries to play like the Lindros of old, his linemates Simon and Barnaby are going to try to make sure no one messes with him. That would turn the game into some fun. As far as the score goes, who knows.

If they (NYR) won't change their D you will win for sure...

I don't remember so many scoring opportunities for my B's in my life. (I think Pens had better D). If our guys didn't miss the net so many times it could've been 8-1 not 4-1. Mind you..our O still sucks and Thornton din't play that game.

This one is being shown live in England so its a late night anf they better win but their record is terrible when ESPN games are shown here. Both teams are suffering on D but the Flyers should win and it wouldnt surprise me if Lindros got a goal.

If only I had NASN...
I'll have to settle for watching the Florida vs Colorado game I recorded yesterday when I get home tomorrow I suppose. At least that was high scoring anyway.

Common sense would tell you that kind of thing would encourage inspired play from the Blueshirts, but common sense and the New York Rangers frequently part company where night-in-night-out, 60-minute effort is concerned.

Flyers 4
Rangers 2

The Flyers-Caps game is delayed Sunday night and they are also showing the Flyers Caps again next week on C5. At least youll get to see them twice in the next week or so.

Is Timander going to play? This team will have like 10 NHL d-men when it is healthy. I am not quite sure what the score will be. I think the Flyers D still might be shaky, but the O will have a good night against a dilapidated NYR D.

4-3 Flyers
