Fritsche = Healthy Scratch?

Why was this kid scratched tonight? He is one of our hardest workers and has been playing well lately, at least thats what I have seen. We need to start winning on the road, is this the way to do it by scratching one of the hardest workers on this team?

He is one of those bubble guys fighting to stay in the lineup so it isnt that surprising. Still I wouldnt scratch him right now. He is working really hard and doing all you can expect from him in his role.

Trading Dan Fritsche at this point would be a step back for this team.

How can you say that without knowing what we'd get in return. When I think of Fritsche being scratched in terms of a trade-related scratch, I would lean toward a better return, because I think his value to this team is high. I have enough faith in management (at this point) to not trade away a young grinder like Fritsche unless it will help our club both this season and long term, because I believe that's their position right now.

But a bizzare scratch unless he's not healthy. I thought he'd been playing fairly well, with enough energy to not question his effort.

PS- Malik was a healthy scratch for the Rangers game tonight vs. Tampa Bay. hmmm...

Could someone explain to me, why a player would need to be scratched when trade talks are going on?

The way I understand it...

Teams generally scratch a player when in talks of a trade to guard from the possibility of injury. If the deal looks good to Columbus and they are really for it they want to protect there asset if he was to play and get a severe injury the other team would back out thus ruining Columbus' chance of getting what they want.

That seems just about right. Didn't think of the injury reason... Thanks for the explanation!
