35 Million Dollar Cap - Game

OK, so let's fast forward to the future and say that the NHL implimented a 35 million dollar HARD cap. What would your Fantasy team look like?

12 forwards (4 centers, 8 wingers)
6 defensemen
2 goalies

C - Thornton - $5.5 mil
C - Spezza - $565,000
C - Datsyuk - $1.5 mil
C - Richards - $2.4 mil

W - Havlat - $1.6 mil
W - Nash $1.185 mil
W - Kovalchuk - $1.13 mil
W - Briere $1.6 mil
W - Morrow $1.4 mil
W - Marleau - $2.35 mil
W - Hossa- $2.75 mil
W - E. Cole $495,000

D - Jovanovski - $4.5 mil
D - Bouwmeester - $1.185 mil
D - Visnovsky - $850,000
D - Boynton - $1.55 mil
D - Chara - $2.4 mil
D - Jackman $800,000

G - Luongo - $1.9 mil
G - Raycroft $550,000

Total - $34.61 mil

Note - I used my Hockey News magazine for the salaries. If anyone could post a link to these salaries on the web I think it would help out this game.

I'm pretty sure most of the players you mentioned are on their first contract and would be getting HUUUUUUUUGE raises on their next one.
Specifically:
Kovalchuk
Nash
Datsyuk
Spezza

so while for now that would be a good team for 35 mil, you're shooting yourself in the foot for 1 or 2 years down the road

774EVER, if it is a 35 million dollar hard cap, wouldn't it be a penalty if a player has bonuses on their contracts that they trigger? I am just saying this, because I know Datsyuk had a bonus where if he gets 70 points (I think that was the stat...) he gets a million dollar bonus. He is on pace to hit 70 points, and if he does that line up's salary jumps to 35.61 million, and slightly over. do the fantasy things take that in account?

Good point. I was just curious as to the type of line-up that could be put together with a budget of 35 mil, using the contracts that the players will be payed this year (03/04). Because It's purely fantasy, I didn't take into account bonuses or the 04-05 contracts.

This does lead to an interesting question though. Using the 35 mil cap, essentially teams would have to work with a budget that is a few million less than 35 to account for bonuses and such. It would also force the GM's to get creative from year to year to stay under the cap.

Hey, a cap would probably mean more trades and everyone loves a good trade. Just think of how many times this board has crashed after a big deal has gone down.

774EVER, that roster would last all of a year(maybe two) before the performances would warrant salary increases. If this is a hard cap, the team must start trading. If it's a soft cap, say hello to luxury tax...and lots of it...

Thats a good idea. I like threads like this, but like Mack mentioned, its too easy just to pick out all the young talents out there and say...bam...there's my team.

Then again, if there are going to be a bunch of rules and stipulations to make it more believable - then its going to require people do a little research and this forum is based much more on instant gratification

Yup, you guys do make sense with the contracts, bonuses etc. I also like the idea of having only 8 that are under 25.

I'll re-post my updated roster when I have time.

BTW - BM67 your team looks pretty good.
