The very first hockey game I ever played (in a league, that is), a friend of mine gave me pretty good advice about what it takes to succeed. He said hockey is "90% skating, and 10% creativity". I don't know if I totally agree, but I've applied that to my own game and it seems to work.
So my recommendation to you: Learn how to skate. GOOD. Learn how to skate forwards, backwards, left and right. Do crossovers in all direction, while controlling the puck (ball?). Become more comfortable on skates than you are on shoes, and apply that to your game.
