Hockey referee attacked, broken jaw

I wish I could better understand some of these players. To attack a ref in a game, and leave him with a broken jaw.

This commentary kinda sums it up:
Hockey Referee attacked and injured in game

Despicable - I always call for suspensions when players touch/hurt referees. If anyone saw Sundin's push on the ref in the Leafs/Sharks game a week ago, they probably saw Sundin push the ref and get away with it. Although that is obviously not so violent, it still calls for something to be done.

Couldn't agree more. I was shocked to see Sundin get away with that. It was all over the news the next day so I hope something gets done about it.

When players physically intimidate officials, I call for suspensions.

When players attack and deliberately injure officials, I call for banishment.

I totally agree. Life banishment from USA would be just a start. A stiff jail term sure wouldnt hurt either.

Man this was a midget game thats disgusting. when i played i had my words with linesman and refs but i never once thought of bumping one or even touching one. this same thing happened last year but in a adult senior hockey game. a guy from local buffalo league attacked an offical idk what happened to the offical but i couldnt think of ever doing anything like that and i was embrassed to be associated with that league after that.

I was once reffing an in-house "A" division game where my partner booted a player for intent to injure. The player was steamed, but went to his locker room.

A few minutes after play resumed, the player jumped back on the rink and pounced on my partner, separating his shoulder in the process.

Needless to say, the player was banned for life. My partner retired from reffing later that week.

It's hard to imagine the mental incapacity of some people who lack the disconnect between a game and real life. It's a joke.

its a game, some people really need to get over themselves. i've had words with refs, but never anything that threaten them and i've never had the thought cross my mind to attack a ref.

You just don't go after officials in a physical manner...ever. They're off limits that way.

The Ottawa Citizen had a recent article exposing 4 major incidents of physical abuse of officials between Jan. 6-14. It is quite a disturbing trend.

The problem isn't limited to Ottawa either. It is country-wide. The sad thing is that officials and their associations are treated as second class citizens by players and coaches at every level. The provincial branches and Hockey Canada can "back us up" and hand out as many suspensions as they can, but it has proven unable to be able to change the attitude towards officials. Sooner than later, we're not going to have many officials anymore.

I think it's time for officials to step up and say something for themselves. I know it's likely a stretch, but I would love it if officials nation-wide were to band together, find the busiest weekend of the season in the country and simply say no to assignors when they call for games that weekend. That would be a strong message.

Clearly a copy-cat assault...

Banishment isn't enough. Criminal charges for assault should be pending. There is a loooooooooooong road between pushing an official and breaking his jaw. Full stop.
