Don Wittman Passes Away

A classy man, and a wonderful voice. I'll never forget him on HNIC. Rest in peace, Don.

Indeed, I was sad to read that today. He was one of the good voices in Canadian sports.

It's been bugging me, when did he last work HNIC? I cannot shake the feeling I saw him very recently, but I must be wrong given it was cancer that took him.

Nonetheless, HNIC won't be the same.

My all-time favourite non-Habs moment in sports.

Also called the '04 Habs-Bruins series and did a great job. Amazing voice.

RIP

There's been a few of those veteran broadcasters die recently. Don Chevrier comes to mind. Another one also I think

Did their series in '02 as well with J.D. The man's voice is synonymous with greatness, "9.84 a world record for Donovan Bailey!".

Truly sad.

Many of my great sports memories have Don Wittman's voice as the backdrop to them.

God bless the Wittman family.

Thanks for the memories Don. Rest in peace.

I quite liked Don for track and field and CFL calls, but not for hockey. My favorite Wittman moment was by far the 9.79 Ben Johnson run. One of the greatest moments in sports. Sigh ... Ben.

RIP Don.

Just saw it on TSN, that really caught me by surprise. I use to love watching games he did, no biase and he had a great voice. He called a lot of the games I watched as a kid in Western Canada, a lot of the Winnipeg Jets with Scott Oake as I recall.

He was great and will be missed.

RIP Mr. Wittman.

He covered the 1986 finals with style, and his track and field work was superb, especially the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki. He was the CBC's most verstaile announcer and played it straight down the middle, even when he came to be the voice of the West covering the CFL.

RIP Mr Whitman.

RIP Don. Loved your play-by-play during the 2004 Eastern Quarter-Final.

Montreal series in 2004.

One of the good ones. Good voice. Fair calls. Knowledgeable. Loved his work. What more can you ask for.

Thanks for doing such a great job.

I'll always remember Don's calls from the many sports he covered, but especially the final few Winnipeg Jets games ever played.

Yes, he did one of the first HNIC games this year. I believe that was his last game he called. He did it while battling cancer and sounded just as great as always. They had a clip of that on the news tonight.
