I was talking about the Habs with a friend of mine and we got to comparing where the team is this year to last season. The topic of those "players only" meetings came up and it reminded me of something.
Remember those rumours last year of a Souray-Kovalev rift? There were even some rumours of a fist fight in the lockerroom that led to that mysterious "elbow injury" and Kovalev missing a few games...The team REALLY fell apart at this point, Kovalev especially didn't look right.
It's no secret that Kovalev and Souray didn't really like each other. It started back in the playoffs vs Boston when Kovalev collided with Souray in double OT and caused the winning goal against. Ever since, there were rumours of these guys arguing in the room...
Well, cut to this year, and Souray is gone. All of a sudden, Kovalev is re-born. He's more vocal, more of a take-charge leader, and he's playing really, really well.
I'm starting to wonder if Souray being gone has allowed Kovalev to blossom a bit. We all know Souray was a big presence in the room, and him and Rivet took up alot of space...It was really their team, moreso than anyone else. Both these guys are gone now, and Kovalev is a totally different person.
Does anyone else think like I do? I think Souray being gone is a big reason why Kovalev is so different now.
I don't think so. I think Sheldon was a much better leader than Kovalev will ever be... Where was Kovalev's leadership last season ? Showing little effort because of a problem with a teammate is not a good excuse IMO. He just decided he had to work and that's all. nothing more.
Absolutely, they werent getting along. But I still give all the credit to Kovalev himself for bouncing back the way he has.
But who was the biggest friend of Souray and Rivet??..Koivu?
I think we still have one sour apple in the club, although i love Koivu, im just not so sure about how much he wants to be here anymore.
Don't hijack this thread. It's Kovalev we're talking about.
Why is it that you believe in every conspiracy theory in the books Dave?
Whether it be Ribeiro hitting on whoever, locker-room rifts, etc., you're always the first to support such rediculous theories and to claim them as facts.
"It's no secret that Kovalev and Souray didn't really like each other." Oh really? Never heard that there was a problem between the two before you decided to claim it as absolute fact.
i also never heard anything about kovalev and souray not liking each other... expect of this rumour where kovalev apparently got destroyed by sheldon in a fight. curiously, kovalev woke up after the rumour came out and he started to produce and lead our winning streak at the end of the season.
anyway... do you guys remember that bégin also fought with Kovalev a few seasons ago ? I think we should get rid of bégin too... like that, kovalev would get 150 pts/season .

You know what, I was thinking the exact same thing. Both Souray and Rivet being gone probably helped guys like Kovalev and Komisarek get established in the dressing room.
Not to take away from those two former Habs players. From every account, the players loved them and Souray was a positive leader.
So-called theories on Oprah/Steadman and Angelina/Brad have more bite than this.
Does this mean that Kovalev has officially replaced Souray as the "real" leader now? Or is it still Higgins/Komisarek for now? Because we all know Koivu is neither a real leader nor captain.
earl the habs fan's thoughtful post on page 1 really says it all.
I think that Carbo and Gainey should include as mandatory summer training the skidding of borrowed motorcycles, preferably belonging to local politicians. All of your other theories are red herrings.
Kidding aside, I liked Earl's and Hackett's posts.
Souray's feelings towards Samsonov weren't negative. He felt that that Habs management treated Samsonov unfairly. I know this because Souray told me over lunch the one and only time we met.

Irrelevant is your own thought process since it doesn't seem to exist.
Come on, tell us which 'friend' you refer to in your original post is the radio personality who said this over the last few days.
And what exactly do you contribute to this place spanky? I can't attribute a single independent thought or opinion or even a topic to you. You have 3000 posts and I can't remember a single one, and I'm willing to bet I'm not the only one.
The closest thing you come to being relevant on this board is that your name kinda looks like AymanD's new one.

Get your own bashing point. Don't copy my beef with your posting habits. At least try to be original when it comes to that ...
CBC reported that Kovalev reviewed tapes of himself playing as a New York Ranger when he had great success as a player. Kovalev said he wanted to play like "that guy" again. I think it has more to do with Kovalev and his pride than any absence of one player. Kovalev made a decision to work harder in the offseason and take a look back at what made him successful. He's a new man and it translates on the ice.
