NHL doing all it can to jazz up all-star game Monday, January 21, 2008 | 12:12 PM ET By Scott Morrison

Dominique Wilkins is coming to the NHL all-star game.

You read that right.

Tom Glavine is probably going to be there, as well.

Wilkins, the former basketball star with the Atlanta Hawks, and Glavine, the current baseball star with the Atlanta Braves, are both expected to serve as celebrity judges Saturday night when the NHL has its annual all-star Skills Competition (CBC, 6:30 p.m. ET).

See, the NHL is jazzing it up big time this year in an attempt to make the lead-in to Sunday's all-star game, which will be played Sunday in Atlanta (CBC, 7 p.m. ET), a little more entertaining.

A big part of it will be what they are calling a creative shootout, where players will be asked to perform wild and crazy shootout techniques and will be judged by a panel of celebrities, including Wilkins and Glavine, as well as some retired NHL stars. The idea is similar to a slam-dunk contest in basketball and, if it is done well, should be fun.

Yes, it is hockey and it isn't purebred hockey, but what the hell? The whole idea of the skills night is about entertainment and in recent years, well, it hasn't been very entertaining. So give the league, which has been working closely with the players' association, credit for trying.

In addition to that, the YoungStars game, which has become a huge dud, will be reduced in time and size to a three-on-three game and will become part of the overall skills competition, the winner contributing points to its conference in the overall competition.

I see no problem with what they're doing. It should be interesting to see what these players could whip up. Maybe some good SportsCenter highlights on some of these moves. Too bad you never see them in game, but at least it showcases just how much talent these guys have.

I'm sorry, but there's just way too much OT content on the baord lately and this isn't even remotely Ranger related.
