Maybe it is Malik to St.Louis for Backman. The Rangers take on Backman's $2.3 million for next season(1 year remaining on the contract).JD is attending the Leetch festivities.Maybe JD and Slats struck a deal last night

Their main pro scout Kevin McDonald was scouting the Pack and Rangers last week

If Sather can trade Malik straight up for a player who can steal Leetch's spotlight....than so be it

So lets talk about what they potentially get back for Malik...

I think it might be a draft pick or a younger player. Veteran defensman? Maybe, but more would have to be put into the deal besides Malik IMO.

God knows they need to get his salary off the books though.

Yes. A few things here

- If Sather gets an offer for Malik, he isn't going to say to the other GM, "Wait 5 days until Leetch night is over," followed by said team going elsewhere. It's totally unethical.

- Why would Sather want to steal the thunder from Leetch? This is easily the most important game of the year. This is the most money-generating game of the year. There is absolutely no way he would want to screw with it.

- The only way this could possibly overtake Leetch night is if the fans were to somehow ruin it themselves. Something like "Malik Sucks" chants during Mike Richter's speech or whatever. If Malik were to be traded it would only add to the intensity. People aren't going to suddenly forget that the greatest Ranger of all time is retiring his jersey tonight

- Maybe Sather is honoring Leetch by getting rid of any embarrassments on defense

The more I think about the whole situation, the more it makes sense that it's Backman or a Blues defender. JD will be in attendance tonight for the big night, and I also thought I read somewhere that Blues had scouts at our games..

Plus, if it is a trade, I would think it would have to happen today. Isn't there a trade freeze for the All Star break?
Oh c'mon. I think it's pretty obvious that a trade wouldn't take the entire spotlight off of Leetch Night. I'm only saying that it's kind of strange to make a trade on Leetch Night, and no I don't believe there is any sort of roster freeze during the All-Star Break...I could be wrong though.

I think it would only increase the fantastic-ness of the night!

Imagine that after that and right before the opening puck drop the fans get this announcement -- "Oh, and Marek Malik has been traded."

The place would go ****ing insane!!!!

Seriously? This isn't Ron Greschner. What do you think we could get for Malik then?

I don't know, but there's a reason why Backman is on the outs in St. Louis. Why replace one defensive liability with another? Hell, Malik might even be less of an overall liability

This is not a trade. Trades don't go down like this.

The previous Rangers management(Neil Smith,Christer Rockstrom, etc)loved Backstrom in 1998.If Malhotra didn't slip,Backstrom had a very good chance of being their pick.

This is how Brian Leetch night goes down in my dreams:

Malik to St Louis for draft picks.

Leetch signed to 1 year contract, looks 10 years younger on the ice, scores game winning goal TONIGHT.

1. Backman will not make a locker room war like Malik will

2. Backman is younger

3. Backman is cheaper

4. Backman had 7 goals last year and 6 the year before

I've stood up for Renney since he got to New York but if Malik has walked out after being told he's scratched, well I quit on being a Renney fan.

He's forced Orr and Strudwick on us all season. Now, when Marek apparently plays a good game (I didn't see it, but I guess he must have been decent for most people on this board to say so) he gets scratched?

As for it being a possible trade, I still think Malik's a valueable player, but much better for him if not the club to get out this team now. If it is a trade I just hope we're getting a good d-man for him.

I guess it's also possible that there are personal reasons for him not being there which Renney might not want to say. However if that's the case then why take your equipment? So i guess it's one of the other two reasons.

i would be willing to give leetch the 6th spot without any consideration to what shape he is in

He adds some offense, fantastic. But it's the defense that this team needs to tighten up if they have any hope of getting to the postseason
