He adds some offense, fantastic. But it's the defense that this team needs to tighten up if they have any hope of getting to the postseason
It's irrelevant. It's like if the Rangers traded Colton Orr for Chris Mcgratten and complaining because we didn't get the scoring winger we need. He isn't going to get a great defensive defenseman for Malik. You really need to quit dreaming if that is what you think. Backman would be an excellent return on Malik, though I think that J.D. is smarter than that and knows he could get Malik extremely cheap if he wanted to.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: The Chicago Blackhawks and Carolina Hurricanes have been searching for a veteran defenceman (preferably a puck-moving one) so perhaps one of those clubs might be Malik's destination if he is indeed traded. I'll be keeping an eye on this one today. As for Jagr, I doubt the Rangers trade him but this could indeed be his final season with the club.

I don't give a damn what they get for Malik, if he's even traded, I'm just saying I'm not a fan of Backman at this point and I don't think he helps the team.

Ok fine. But you are completely ignoring.....

Backman

2.3 million

Malik

I love Renney's choice of answer as "internal matter." It makes it sound like the Rangers are being audited.

what, a marginally less expensive defenseman who's signed for another year and is inconsistent offensive and defensively? Woo! Just what this team needs.

It wouldn't be the worst trade in the world, or even a bad trade, it just doesn't address any needs in any way and ties up another sizable chunk of money for another year

I think Owens was only sent down to play in the ECHL All-Star game last night.

I didn't realize he had the extra year. Regardless, if we traded Malik for a completely identical Malik clone minus the attitude, it would be good for this team. Mara didn't really do much for us last year, but look at what getting Ward out of the locker room did.

IM not totally sold on getting a guy like Backman either by the way.

That is correct. Owens was sent down so he could participate in the All Star game. The plan was always to bring him back afterwards, so his call up is unrelated to anything Malik-related.
