Listening to tonight's Blues Buzz with Andy Strickland and Bob Plager, I heard something from Plager when the topic turned to Jackman that I hadn't definitively heard or read previously:
when asked about the Blues and the Jackman contract situation, Plager mentioned that "Jackman had turned down the extension and would test the market". It was rather non chalant so maybe I've missed this somehow, but this is the first I'd heard of Jackman having turned down a contract extension and that he was definitely planning on testing the free-agent waters at season's end.
I shouldn't be terribly surprised I guess, Jackman may find a huge market for his services, but I thought the Blues were still having "on-going" negotiations with Jackman and held out hope of him re-signing.
To me, this puts the likelihood of him being dealt at the deadline somewhere around 90%
Curious if this is/was common knowledge already, if so apologies in advance. Prefer this forum to the other Blues Forum's I check in on, as it seems as though most here have more "realistic" expectations for this club this year and a whole lot less impatience.
If this is indeed accurate, I'm not heartbroken. Jackman hasn't elevated his game to a level that warrants us overpaying to keep him. He stlll has a ton of name value around the league and would be a great rental for a Cup contender. We'd be talking about good talent coming back.
I agree about not overpaying for him and earlier in the day Strickland was on 1380 saying that Jackman basically overvalues himself. If you read between the lines there I think he is gone.
I think it's pretty safe to say the market will get Jacks a LOT more than we'd offer him. This sucks, I thought for sure he was going to be our Chelios.

I think one of Roman Polak/Ian Cole will turn out well for us.
I know that a healthy Polak could arrive to NHL for good later in the year, but when is Cole realistically expected to follow?
If we can get a high pick (1st or 2nd) in this loaded draft and a potential top 6 fwd prospect for Jackman at the deadline, I'd be elated. This would obviously also make retaining Salvador easier I would think.
Not very surprising news, and I just hope we can get something good for him at the deadline. Jackman just hasn't progressed enough from his rookie year to get too cut up about him leaving. I don't want to say he over values himself, because I am sure he will get what he wants from another team, but I don't believe he is worth what he wants to this Blues team. I think the management are more about retaining the services of Salvador anyway.

Cole is struggling at University of Notre Dame this season. Though he is only 18 and a freshman.
I would be shocked if Cole was in a Blue Note before he turns 21.
Remember, we have Mckee for another 2 1/2 years...we also have Polak who will be here for awhile. Combine that with EJ, Wagner, Woywitka to name a few....I don't think there is any rush for Cole...which is a good thing for all involved.
I would much rather have a top 10 pick for Jax....rather than a 15-30 pick and a "prospect". (which I think we might have a shot at)
Should be interesting to see what we end up with in return.
Also, I want to see Salvador back as a 5th-6th dman....but only if he is willing to be paid as a 5th-6th D-man.

Really? I think it is way more beneficial to get a prospect who is already a year or two removed from his draft year....should make their arrival with the big club come sooner. I'd love for us to have all of our kids out there developing as a unit. Would be terrific to have them all on the same development schedule.
Though I won't be upset if we end up with a top 10 pick rather than a middle first and a player.

Cole is by no means "struggling". I just watched the games against Michigan not long ago and the announcers did nothing but praise Cole. He looked really good and got powerplay time as a freshman

I would think we'd be trading Jax to a cup contender, meaning it would be a later draft pick, although i would love a top 10 for this draft
also it seems like if this information got out (that Jax is def heading to FA) his value will take a hit (i.e. Campbell from Buffalo) making it harder for JD & co. to get another team to overpay for him

He'll be in St. Louis in 2009-2010 probably
Bingo - not struggling in the slightest. He's constantly called a "stud defenseman," and not by guys who are impressed with pedigree or are shills. We're talking college analysts who are more honest and relay more knowledge about the game in a few sentences than most NHL-level announcers, analysts, and journalists. But more than that what people say, he actually plays very well. Notre Dame is doing very well and he's a noticeable part of that. He made the WJC squad as a defensive defender seven months after being drafted. A squad that arguably underachieved, but that doesn't slow his development or path to the NHL.
If he continues to blossom, he'll be in the NHL as soon as he wants. He's physically ready NOW, it's just about developing and seasoning. I doubt he'll finish college. Look for him to hit the AHL for some games first, but depending on injuries, trades, etc, he could see NHL duty 09-10, but 10-11 is a safer bet.
I think Junland cracks this team before Cole or Fairchild. We're short on offensive talent and hes gonna be a good one on the point on the PP.
As for Jax, love his grit, but 6 mins in boneheaded penalties in the first period tonight reminded me why he's so annoying. His game is really more suited to pre-lockout NHL, but he has certainly made strides, and he gives it his all, and for that he has my respect.

And Woywitka and Hellstrom have better chances of making it before Junland (and I agree that he will make it before Cole or Fairchild - barring a huge development).
Regarding Jackman, I think the biggest problem is that he's mean and nasty, but not physically dominant. Hell, Backman threw the body around better than he did tonight. Jackman will get a nice hit now and then, but it's a lot more roughing and slashing than true physicality. And that would be fine if he would break out in other ways - which he has shown the ability to do, but simply hasn't. He's just hit his overall ceiling - particularly on the Blues and in Murray's system.
Jackman is a good shotblocker - that's certainly not up for argument. And he's mean. And it seems like he's a passable alternate captain. He's a good skater for his role. But that's about it. He's not a true shutdown guy, and hasn't been for a while. For a defensive defender with decent wheels, he's rather poor at getting in passing lanes. I know everybody complains about Brewer and Backman, but they, along with EJ and Salvador, have truly shown up Jackman this season. The Blues are very lucky that Jacks is healthy this year to stabilize his trade value. As far as I'm concerned, deal him as fast as possible - don't wait for the extra fifth round pick's worth of value that you'll get at the deadline, trade him before he re-injures his shoulder or gets another concussion.
I doubt the Blues will swing a first-rounder, unless it's like Jackman and a third-rounder for a first-rounder. It'll probably be something more like a solid prospect or a second rounder. But stranger things have happened.

Look at the deadline last year, Rivet went for a 1st so I see no reason why Jackman wont garner atleast that. At this point, there are more then likely only two dman who have good value at the deadline - Campbell and Jax that will be moved.

Wrong again Checker.
I have seen him play IN PERSON 6 times this season. On top of another a few other games on tv.
He IS STRUGGLING.
I love how you think you know everything. You have no clue what your talking about, once again.
Why don't you watch ONE Peoria game on t.v. and than tell Prussian he is wrong as well.

Good Point.
I agree, it would be nice to have propsects to make it up quicker. But I also don't want busted 1st or 2nd rounders to come here.
I would rather take a few more years and let Jarmo hand pick his players.
But if JD and Jarmo find a player they really believe will help instead of a pick...I"m all for it.

I agree, that is probably what will happen...getting traded to a Cup Contender.
But I think, or wishing, that a bottom 10 team would trade for him and re-sign him.
Hopefully there is one team out there willing to risk that...but maybe that is wishful thinking.

DING DING DING!!
I agree 100%.
And like rumrokh said, We will see Woywitka and Hellstrom as well as Junland before Cole.
Not to mention Polak and Wagner.
From the people I have talked to at UND, I think Cole will finish out at UND and than go thru the AHL. 2012 he might be up here.

The Michigan game was the exception, not the rule. He's struggled this year, and there's no way he's in St. Louis in '09-10 even if he regains form tonight and has a monster rest of this season and next season.
