trade proposal

flames fan here, i was just wondering what it would take to get umberger and upshall to calgary. i know that the flyers have some cap trouble next season so im guessing some prospects or picks going the other way would do it. i was thinking along the lines of...

to cgy: umberger, upshall

to philly: nystrom + hale(impending UFA) + 3rd rounder in 08

opinions?

he just meshes well with the team, and he should come fairly cheap, so Im not too worried about his contract. Same for upshall, this town loves him.

i was serious about my proposal. ill admit, i dont know a lot about the flyers except that they are going to have some 'serious' cap issues next season.
with either huselius or langkow leaving (probably langkow) or both, the flames need a cheap top six centre to play with iggy.

Well, from what I know about the Flames, that would be like:
Tanguay, Boyd

for

Potulny + Smith + 3rd

Here's the problem with your proposal. Upshall's a fan favorite checking line winger. And while Nystrom looks like a comparable player (albeit an older one), the move is lateral at best. Which brings us to the second part of your proposal. Hale is a bottom pairing defensemen, and the 3rd round pick is just that...a third round pick. The Flyers currently have a surplus of bottom-pairing defensemen, and by letting Umberger walk on July 1st after tendering him a qualifying offer the Flyers could stand to gain at the minimum a 2009 1st round pick that ranges from 1st overall to 30th.

we are not sure about these "cap problems" hatcher, smith, knuble, kapanen and vandameer all might be gone nexy year before players such as carter and umberger

First of all, if we really wanted to add in Tanguay we have plenty of salary ready to jettison.

Secondly, don't shake your head at me, you are the one who made the bad proposal. Since you admittedly don't watch too many Flyers games, I was trying to turn it around so you saw what your proposal looks like to a Flyers' fan.

I don't want to make a new thread so I thought I'd post this here.

What would it take to get Upshall in a sabres uniform?

we aren't going to have serious cap issues, but we might have some issues, but you can better expect guys like kappy, knuble and hatcher to be gone.

I was thinking along the lines of...........no

Sorry but they Flyers are not in cap trouble........and plus for the last time Umberger and Carter are RFA and the Flyers have to match an offer that probably won't come from another team. Umberger is playing great but the numbers arent there.

Um, no they're not. Have you met our GM, he's a miracle worker--no cap worries here.

Start with Sekera, and go from there.

The Flyers current needs are a top 4 puck moving defenseman and and a franchise goalie prospect. All other proposals are irrelevant.

hatcher, vandy and kapenen will be gone before the start of next year. knuble, well we can at least trade him for a pick. smith i would try to resign, and if the money is too much, then go after a ufa dman. from what i have been reading nhl revenue is up, so the cap hopefully goes up 1-2M for next year. that will leave us in good shape. i am sure homer is gonna get the carter and umburger deals done.

hence a trade with calgary to shed some salary is not required.

as far as bringing in a goalie, well maybe we should draft one. the quality for goalies this year is not that great, so we could try for one in round 3 or so, or see what they look like next year.

nine goals is far from great, sorry but thats the truth. He's improved especially in his skating but he's not going to get the interest Carter will. The question is if you are another team would you give up atleast a first round pick for a guy who's only projected to get 15 goals this year.

Yes I am aware of the assists.

He plays on a line where Briere is on pace for more than 30 goals and Gagne is a perennial 40 goal threat. It's not his job to score goals, it's his job to help set those guys up and so far, he's done an absolutely outstanding job of doing that.

I'm perfectly fine with his stats and play this year, he's a lot faster and stronger than he was before and he's one of our best playmakers.

I'm not saying he's more important than Carter, but I think he should definitely be kept around for next year.
