The Fourth Line Game

I actually heard Doc Emerick mention this idea.

As an all-star weekend idea...play a game of the best 4th line guys (east vs. west)...it would be a great way to reard the guys that do the dirty work and do their job when they get the tap on the shoulder...

it would probably be kind of fun to watch the stiffs try to play an all-star style game (little contact)...or maybe not?

who would you select to the team???

the rags actually have a couple of decent 4th liners...maybe fedoruk?

4th line all star game? It should be just like, a giant royal rumble then. But it would still rock.

you can't avg more then 10 mins/gm and have to have a min # of penalty minutes...

maybe the 4th liners vs the young guns??? nope, that could get ugly.

Upshall has to be the best fourth liner in the league.

Currently on the 3rd line chief.
Dowd Cote and Sami are our 4th.

I think since he meant that sami and upshall sometimes switch between both lines...

Thats what me and couple of friends were talking about when we were watching the skills comp. Have fans vote the top 8 fighters in the league, seed them 1 through 8 and a one loss elimination.

Althought this is not reality, especially in the new NHL it was fun to think about.

I've always thought an "All-Goon" game would be great to see, and probably pull some of the highest ratings we'd see.

Unfortunatly it's merely a pipe dream.

For one, Scottie has spent most of the year getting 4th line minutes. But more importantly, it was an underhanded jab at Stevens that seemed to fly over everyone's head.... chief.

This isn't wrestling or UFC people, this is hockey -- a sport played and the object is to score goals, not fights. While I love fighting as much as the next guy, you can't just stick two people on a sheet of ice with skates and say "go fight"! A lot of these guys hurt themselves during fighting, whether its from giving or receiving punches and being thrown to the ice. Plus, I think its just a poor marketing ploy trying to get people to watch our fighting...fighting is what makes our game even better, but it should not be the reason people tune in.

Not to mention, a lot of these older fighters have great respect for each other, and I doubt you would get any of them to agree to it. And, if people don't know the 4th liners, why would anyone tune in? Its hard enough for people to get to watch all-stars like Crosby and Kovalchuk, do you really think anyone gives a damn about Jim Dowd?

Yes, it's not the UFC, but the All-Star game barely resembles hockey either. I personally wouldn't want to see a 60 minute on ice brawl, but I'd like to see a little physicality and intensity in the game. Sometimes I think I'd settle for even a tiny bit of defensive play. The game is just flat out no fun to watch for me, and unfortunatly I'm not the only one who feels this way.

This I can agree with, and I remember the only thing I ever had to look forward to was Jeremy Roenick hitting someone in an all-star game. Look at this from an athlete's standpoint...the game is MEANINGLESS. It means absolutely nothing to most of these players, considering it SHOULD be a few days rest. But these stars need to go out and play, and the idea is to not get injured. The idea is to show up...thats about it. If anyone has any ideas as how to fix this, then say it now, but thats the reality.

A game of 4th liners would be boring.

I mean, there's a reason they're on the 4th line.

yeah, it wasn't his best moment but i think it was meant as a way to reward the guys that do the heavy lifting...it wouldn't be much different then the young stars game...just another attraction on skills night or in this case lack of skills

No thanks.

Who the **** would pay money or turn on their tv to watch Jim Dowd's skinny legs skate around and pretend to be fancy?

There is a difference between AHL and NHL...the AHL is great for families and groups because it is cheap and in smaller cities. The NHL is the big leagues, and to try and promote players that have zero exposure or brand capacity is asinine. I do agree with the fact from a sport standpoint that they deserve to be rewarded, but so do the 3rd liners and the 2nd liners and even the 1st liners who fail to make the game. As do the defensemen, the backup goalies, the assistant coaches, the trainers, the front office staff........are you picking up what I'm putting down?
