People need to understand that we will not be getting any more All Star calibure players for a while.
With Timonen, Richards, Briere, Gagne and Hartnell all under long term/expensive contracts our team is set with big name players for the next couple of years.
When are people going to realize we can't afford Campbell, Hossa, Phaneuf ect. or any other big time player for the next couple of years. They think "oh, lets just get rid of Hatcher and we can sign whomever we want" is the answer. Any money that is free needs to spent on re-signing Umberger and Carter.
you got that right, he is gonna be expensive. he is not gonna give the flames any break in terms of a cheap deal. they will have to fork over some serious cash for him. he will look at free agency too.
Is Calgary talking about trading him, because otherwise, this is a pipe dream. Sure I am interested, but, in the same way I am interested in winning the lottery. And I don't even play the lottery, but interested am I nonetheless.
Carter, JVR, Parent and a couple firsts might get a pause before the phone is slammed down. But to be honest, if he was available and we could make the cap hit work, I'd probably do that.
I don't think I would. JVR and Carter are both going to be 30 goal scorers in this league, Carter has a shot at hitting that mark this season. Phaneuf is a great player but I like the way our team is built now.
Carter, Giroux, Parent, Picard, 1st round pick (which I'd do without a moment's hesitation)
Something along those lines because he IS worth that much -- he's an elite two-way defenseman who is turning 23 in a few months -- and is still 3-4 years away from his real prime (which is scary to think about).
Sure, our talent/depth cupboard would take a substantial hit, but we'd still have prospects like JVR, Ratchuk, Bartulis, Nodl, Potulny, Ruzicka, etc., which is certainly nothing to scoff at. Having the ability to trade for a guy like Phaneuf is the reason why you keep the farm stacked with talent.

Well, what's Phaneuf going to want salary wise next year? Like 6.5 million? We trade Carter that's going want 2 million or probably more next year and we get rid of a few other forwards that are going to want raises or are making 2-4 million already and get Phaneuf. Bring up Giroux and JVR, they won't be making very much in their first few years.
Plus if we top load Phaneuf's contract like we have for others, it would work out.
This is all just talk though and assuming that Dion doesn't want to re-sign with Calgary.
It's just that I look at Detroit with Lidstrom and Rafalski and Anaheim with Pronger/Neidermayer/Schnider and I want a better defense for Philly.
To get quality you usually have to give up quality. We have other young players that we could call up, granted, they're not as good as JVR and Giroux but that will all be forgotten after Dion crushes his first player in open ice while wearing a Flyers jersey.
Besides, I don't think we'd have to give up both JVR and Giroux if other players are added to the mix.
