1/30: Vali may play, Renney uses bad words, Shanny teaches, Jagr tries to hurt self..

and much more!

From practice in Philly

http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/hockey/rangers/blog/

Quote:
Backup goaltender Stephen Valiquette could very well start against the Flyers tomorrow night in the first game of the back-to-back road series. Henrik Lundqvist would then play Friday against New Jersey in Newark and in Montreal on Sunday afternoon.
Quote:
Renney used some colorful language during attack drills. "Everybody understand the ------ concept? Drive the net. You want to win hockey games? ------ wake up!"....At one point, Shanahan took linemates Brandon Dubinsky and Nigel Dawes to the dry-erase board attached up on the glass to discuss positioning...Near the end of practice, bare-headed Jagr fired puck after puck off the old sideboards from about seven or eight feet away. At one point, a puck whizzed back high at him, forcing him to rapidly duck. He stopped and skated away. When I asked him in the ancient locker room, with a row of clothes hooks and wooden benches, what he was doing and if he could teach me that shot, he said with a grin: "I was trying to get injured."
Quote:
Marc Staal (flu) and Marcel Hossa (back spasms) were absent. Renney said he anticipated that Staal, who has a slight cut under his left eye from an errant puck, would play tomorrow.

We'll see if that motivates them.

Maybe something will snap with this team practicing in that old place and Renney finally yelling at them.

Like their in the Twilight Zone or something.

i never see that in him, he should have done that yesterday when Gomez got boarded, and then they call that weak call on Shanny

Anyways, good to see Renney rip into the guys, I hope it starts to sink in. It makes you wonder if Renney is really telling these guys to do one thing and then they do the exact opposite...

I'd like to think that if he had, they would have been playing with a little more fire all along.

Hey, if he has to channel the Great Tortellini a bit to get them going, I'm all for it. Scream first, ask questions later.

Tortellini? So I guess all Renney has to do is eat a dish of pasta and he's good to go?

renney's gotta show some anger. it's about time! enough of the joe torre method of "oh i'll just sit back never argue anything and drink my green tea, maybe i'll invite the ump for tea and crumpets after the game". that strategy does not work as time goes on. it's gotten to the point where they really literally need to be woken up, and the only way possible is for them to be yelled at.

they should just do what most coaches do is shorten the bench, play the players that are playing well like Dubinsky, Gomez, Betts. id give Dubinsky more ice time and Gomez, most coaches double shift guys, when renney has the 4th line in a 3-1 game towards end, it makes u wonder.

The Great Tortellini was what Clarke was calling Tortorella during the Lightning/Flyers playoff series a few years back. But yeah, the pasta would probably help, too.

Last week's Thrashers practice in NYC between the two games had some damn colorful language from Brad McCrimmon. He ripped into them for about 5 minutes after he had them doing Herbies for 10 minutes. As they're catching their breath he ripped them new ***holes. Then they did 5 more minutes of Herbies before continuing practice.

Funny that extended bike ride punishment Sutter gave the Devils after the last game didnt work last night, they lost a lead again.

Sometimes you have to pick and choose your tirades and punishments as a coach. Not saying that this team in particular will tune out Renney, but its the WAY Renney speaks that is not angry.

Its almost like when hes angry hes acting as angry and not truly angry. IM sure hes truly angry but not angry enough to make the players angry enough to play harder for the angry coach...

right?
