Jody Shelley Appreciation Thread

It only seems like yesterday Shelley was called up for the penguins game during the 2000/2001 season. Sure were happy to have some more skill on the ice but it doesnt make it any easier to see such a class act leaving the city.

Bob Hunter had a great article in todays dispatch if u havent got to see it. A part that stood out to me.

Shelley on his role with the team leading up to the trade ...
" Even this week, ( coach hitch ) grabbed me and said, 'hey i dont know what's going to happen as far as playing, but you're a big part of this room, and you're showing the young guys the way they have to act.' It makes me proud that he called me in and told me that because he didn't have to."

Definetly a pro at being one cool dude.

"Shelley on his role with the team leading up to the trade ..."

"KNOW YOUR ROLE"

That was Jody's quote from back in 2000 when he was with Johnston Chiefs.
He knew his role with the CBJ, accepted it and took the opportunity to make
himself better (1st on the ice, last off it). Sure, he wasn't the best skater or
player, but the best character person on the short CBJ history .

Thanks for the memories - best of luck.

Few first games from Jackets players have been as memorable as Jody's first: in fact, I'd probably only also include Nash and Zherdev in that list.

No one looked better smiling with blood on his face than Shelley.

One of the best names...ever.

Jody dominated Detroit once.

Happy to have him on our team. Happier to read all the nice things about him in here.

Just a pre-emptive warning. Keep this thread for Jody appreciation and memories ONLY.

Debates about his play, his worthiness for praise and the trade itself are to remain in the existing trade thread.

I'm calling it right now:

The Jackets' first sellout of the year will be Feb 27, 2008 when Shelley returns to Nationwide.

People will be wearing Shelley jerseys forever.

That's a testament to how beloved he was.

I can vaguely understand the call to retire #45, but I do think that would be, ah, slight overkill.

Maybe a sort of informal retirement? No banner raised, but nobody else puts on #45 unless he says OK?

Dear Mr. Shelley (always show respect to someone who can punch your lights out!),
Thank you for giving me something to cheer about on the nights my favorite hockey team was getting their butts kicked.

This is a great post Lee, and I think it really sums up how I feel about Jody.

"You were necessary and we came to love you for it, eventhough we were losing..." "But you soon found yourself without a job at home, when the team began to win..."

Happy trails Jody, I'm sure we'll see you around this team in the future.

I'll miss Jody. My sister mailed a bunch of cards and letters to the team once to try and get them autographed for me. Only Sanderson and Jody replied, but Jody sent me a second card (I'll assume for my sister).

Class act, hope things work out well for him.

I don't really understand appreciation threads, it's unlikely he would every see it.

Just show up to the game on the 27th and chant "Jody" or something, if you really want to show him what you think.

You must be having a bad day.

It's a community coming together to remember someone they appreciated. That's all an appreciation thread is.

You don't stop saying, "Thank you," because a person is gone.

The "appreciation" thread is nothing more then a big group hug. Re-read my post. If you really wanted to appreciate him, there are better ways.

Plenty of people thanked him in the other thread (including me), this seems redundant. No biggie, not saying it shouldn't exist. I just don't get the need for all this repeated "feel good". But if people need to say more, please carry on.

My intent on the post is, if people feel this strongly, do something more. Call the Jackets and ask them to have a "Shelly Night" on the 27th or something.

Or have Skraut do a video montage of him to the tune of "Thnks for the Memories"

The appreciation thread isn't for HIM, it's closure for US.

I hope that when Jody's playing days are over that he'll come back to the Blue Jacket family in some sort of capacity and that management is smart enough to hire him.
