Is Mike Smith Available?

I was wondering about the availability of Mike Smith. The Kings could use a decent goalie, how has he been playing what is his potential? What would it take to get him?

Mike Heika believes he's available. I'd be afraid to loose him before the playoffs. If Turco gets hurt, anyone else the Stars pick up as a backup probablly wouldn't be as good as Smith.

That said, I would think it would have to be Mike Cammalleri or Alexander Frolov for Smith and maybe another roster player like Daley or you could have Norstrom back. Does LA need anymore forwards or defensemen?

If the Kings were willing to give us Cammalleri, I'd be ok with that.

Kings get:
Mike Smith, G
Trevor Daley, D

Stars get:
Mike Cammalleri
2008 6th round pick

Does that work for anyone?

I could see Cammy being moved for Smith + ? If Smith is available. I like him alot better than the garbage that is currently available now. The only problem is the whole divisional rival thing.

LA needs defensive defenseman, I wouldn't mind getting some offense back like Miettinen(SP?) or Jokinen but I don't know if that is fair value.

I don't see LA going after Norstrom in a trade, if they really want him back they will wait for free agency.

Nagy, Handzus, and Calder havent put nearly the number they had thought. Then LA's D in ranked 29th in the league. Lots of holes to fix!

Is Daley an offensive Defenseman? They Kings already have abundance of them and there is not enough pucks to go around.

He was supposed to be a PP specialist, but he's established himself as one of the better defensive defensemen on the team last season. Two-way defenseman, awesome skater, solid PK presence, and if he can ever get his offense going, he could be a quality defender someday. Biggest problem right now is his inconsistency and the depth on the Stars as a whole. Boucher, Niskanen, Zubov, Robidas and Norström get more quality icetime than him, so he has to fight with rookies Grossman and Fistric for that final spot. Despite all this, he's still put up a respectable 13 points so far.

If, big if, Mike Smith is traded, can Ed Belfour be signed away from his Swedish team, or is he stuck there for the remainder of the season? According to his website his record is 13-3-1 with 1.70 GAA, 6 SO, and .926 Save%.

How great would that be to have him back in Dallas for part of the season? He may not get to play much, but maybe he could start another fight at the Mansion or tear up someone's locker room.

I'm a huge fan of the Eagle and have tons of respect for what he's done for the Dallas Stars franchise, yet the two didn't part on good terms. He was a horrible tutor to Marty Turco and I doubt his ego would let him play the role of a mere backup.

I may have my kings fan glasses on and am not seeing clear but Cammy might be one of our biggest bargaining chips, Smith has alot of value imho but I'm not sure about Daley. Might have to add a pick in there to pry Cammy away.

I can actually see a deal like this taking place if LA and Lombardi are truly seeking a number 1 goalie. LA might even overpay a little for a good goalie. The deal makes sense to me for both teams.

I'm not sure about him either.

One question in all of this...why the hell would we trade a goaltender (and a good one at that) to a divisional team that we would play 6 times next season? That part makes no sense to me.

Yeah, this has Bryzgalov levels of potential regret written all over it. Look at the prospects the Kings and Stars swapped last deadline. 2 guys that their respective teams were pretty sure were going to bust on the other. Smith may be available, but probably not for LA.

I think the division rival thing would probably kill this deal, but stranger things have happened. I like Labarbera and I think he's a solid backup who can fill in during long stretches if need be, I just don't think he'll ever be a number one. The Kings defense is atrocious so that makes it hard to truly critique goalies as well.

Cammalleri's contract is up after next season. The Kings have alot of young guys that they will have to sign in the next couple of years. I'm not opposed to them keeping Cammy but I think if someone has to go he is probably the most expendable(Purcell looks like he's going to be real good) and he would probably fetch a decent return on the open market.

The Kings and Dallas have made deals before, I wouldn't say it's completely out of the question.

The question makes since for the Kings as well. Why would they trade a goal scorer to a divisional rival?

Because it would be to the Stars, and everyone knows good scorers die in Dallas. Nah, I don't see it working either and if Smith isn't available, he should be.

Yes but never have they done it with a goaltender involved...and IMO trading a good goaltender to a divisional rival where he can then stone you game after game...is completely out of the question. Trading for Norstrom is completely different IMO.

"If a deal could be done"

Would Cammy(still has a year remaining at around 3.5m) for Smith/Jokinen/and a first in 09 be to much to ask? Just trying to seriously gauge how you view Cammy's value.

Many Kings fans are not high on Smith's capabilities and think that Cammalleri can net us a much better return elsewhere.

All 3? For Cammalleri? Not a chance.. Besides, the Stars will and should treat their next first round pick ('09) like it's their first born.

Thanks for all the input. One last question for Stars fans. Do you honestly view Smith as a future number 1 or is he a career back up?

Mike Smith has stolen points for us numerous times in his short NHL career already, and not necessarely against bad opponents, either. Big, quick and athletic goalkeeper. His puckhandling skills are also great. I'd say that he can definitely round out to be a capable #1 NHL netminder. He could be seen as NHL's best backup so who knows how he does given full duties.

In the off-season maybe. No reason to trade him now.

I think he has the potential to be a #1. Whether he stays in Dallas and continues to be the backup, I don't know...but I would love for him to stay here.

Nobody is going to come in here and steal Turco's position away, which I think Smitty understands. But as, ajacied said, Smitty has stolen numerous game already..especially against Anaheim it seems.

The only way I see him becoming the #1 here is
1) Turco somehow...someway gets traded which isn't going to happen.
2) Turco goes down long term with an injury.
3) Turco gets a career ending injury.

I wouldn't mind Cammy at all especially if it only cost Smith plus somebody small.

I doubt he would be given away, I would think that a deal would have to start with Smith and Jokinen for Cammy. Pieces could be added to it as need be(Aubin, picks, etc.), jmo though.

This would make sense on a some level but I doubt it's even close to being a reality. The Kings won't trade Cammalleri unless the deal really is a can't resist move, at least for this year. Next year will really be interesting for the Kings winger.
