This is a great deal for both parties. Both the length and the amount are perfect (if accurate of course)

Good job by Sutter

Teams like Nashville, Florida, and even Atlanta are what I would consider small hockey markets in the modern NHL.

What good is it to really have that population anyway when you have the NFL, MLB, NBA, etc. to compete with often times in the same area on top of the fact that there's far fewer hockey fans.

Very well said. I totally agree, Calgary and and Edmonton are no small markets. They are the fastest growing cities in Canada. They are huge hockey markets, with the economy booming. All they need are new arenas and their value go's up. In 2-5 years they both should have new arenas and by that time, the population should be well over 1 million. And they don't have compete with no other major league's. Just the CFL, but hockey is king here. Hopefully some Stanley Cups

They both been through a lot.

great deal for the flames. I'm pretty confident Dion could have gotten 7.5 maybe 8 a year as an RFA. This deal actually drives the market down a bit. Thank you calgary.

A small market Canadian team who's ownership group is probably the richest out of all owners in the league since the oil companies keep posting billion dollar profits. I don't think there is a such a think as a small-market team anymore. Only "non-traditional markets".

well it's not official yet, but i like it. so now what will all the doom sayers say now with Iginla, Kiprusoff, Phaneuf, and Regehr all signed long term? sure one of Langkow or Huselius is likely gone, but we've known that for a long time now. and who knows, maybe Sutter works some magic and ships Tanguay off to keep both. regardless Calgary has a solid core locked up long term, all the other pieces are interchangeable

Not a bad deal for Phaneuf... but definitly not a discount...

Now they have like 6-8 mill to sign 6 forwards a defense man or 2 and a backup...

To bad all their good prospects bolted to Russia...

Those numbers aren't accurate either. Nothing has been released, except that Calgary is close to signing a deal with Phaneuf, they just need to work on minor details

The numbers he's reporting are an estimation as to how much money the Flames would have spent per person, of their defensive core, on their top 7 players and who would likely be the odd man out.

Trust Stang to be trolling, as usual. You might not want to cast stones when one of your prospects bolted to Russia too.

And everyone else is bolting for anywhere else.

LOL one of our Prospects was given permission to go back and play in Russia...

How many of yours just took off? 3

Anyways... does this spell the end of Huesilus and Langkow?

If I were Sutter I would be seeing if Tanguay wanted to move... and try a get some decent prospects who have cheap cap hits. You fill a couple bottom 6 spots for cheap and open oup some space to sign on of either Langkow and Husilus (man I can spell his name)

OR

Trade Langkow and Huselius at the deadline aget a couple cheaper bodys and some picks

Giordano and Taratukhin were nowhere near Calgary's best prospects.

Where did Mihknov (SP?) go?

TSN's Maguire said it would be 7 million for the 1st 4 years and 5.5 the following 2... that sounds like more than an estimation to me

$6.5M over six years is a fair deal for both sides.

If the terms end up being $6.0-6.5M over four years (which is what is being rumoured), Calgary gets absolutely jobbed as they won't have bought any of Phaneuf's UFA years.

so I guess Roger Millions isn't coming out with a "scoop" that Dion doesn't want to live in the limelight and is going to leave?

Still lol @ the Regher speculation last year by him .... what a clown to make that bold of a statement as the team PBP guy, and be dead wrong

Bye-bye to two of Langkow, Huselius, or Tanguay.

Hello to a worse Flames team next year.

Fair deal for Dion, not skewed to either side. The Aucoin and Sarich cap numbers are going to hurt the Flames now.

why don't you wait and see what happens before you proclaim such a thing... there are options such as trades and buyouts... and would it really cripple this team to only have 3 first line players instead of 4?

How much will the cap go up next year? 5 million?

I think we will keep at least 2 of Huselius, Langkow, and Tanguay. or at the very least bring in suitable counterparts.

Well yeah ... Daryl Katz coming on board for the Oilers will also change that.

Calgary and Edmonton are actually two of the fastest growing cities in North America to boot, not just Canada and hockey is the no.1, no.2, and no.3 sport here.

You will find very, very few CFL-only fans in Alberta, the CFL is what people watch here during the hockey off-season.

The funny thing is, I'm not sure about the ownership in Calgary, but I think in Edmonton they probably would in the future like to get rid of the cap now or perhaps get a softer cap in the next CBA.

Okay, for those fans who think that it would still be impossible for the Flames to sign both Langkow and Huselius and still have a team after all this, It's time for some cap education.

Cap hits for 08-09
Iginla 7.00 F
Phaneuf 6.50 D
Kiprusoff 5.833 G
Tanguay 5.25 F
Aucoin 4.00 D
Regehr 4.00 D
Sarich 3.60 D
Warrener 2.35 D
Lombardi 1.55 F
Eriksson 1.50 D
Primeau 1.40 F
Nilson 1.00 F
Boyd 0.742 F
Moss 0.550 F
7 F 6 D 1 G
$41.675 Million spent.

Assuming the cap goes up to 53.5 million next season (Conservative estimate), that leaves 11.825 million to sign a backup and 5 forwards.

A priority should be to sign Owen Nolan for what he brings to the team. Extend him @ 1 year for 2.00 (current cap hit)

Down to 9.825 Million for 4 F and a backup.

Trade/waiver/put in minors Warrener, Primeau, Eriksson and Nilson as they do not contribute enough for their 6.25 million dollar cap hit.

16.075 for 6 F 2 D 1 G

Sign Curtis McElhinney to a 1 year 750K contract (20+% raise)

15.325 for 6 F 2 D

Sign David Hale to a 2 year 1.8 million dollar Contract (900K per) and Adam Pardy to a 1 year 650K deal.
Call up Tim Ramholt to be 7th D

13.135 for 6 F

Sign Eric Nystrom to a 1 year 900K contract
Call Up Brandon Prust (600K Cap hit)
Call Up Warren Peters (488K Cap Hit)
Sign Conroy to a 1 year 1.5 (if not Conroy, insert name of other free agent center for 1.5 million)

Total Remaining 9.647 2 F remaining

This is where the Fun begins.

Sign Langkow to a 7 year deal structured this way. 8,6,6,4,3,2,1
He will be 39 by the time the contract is over and it will allow him to get the money now and still be affordable in cap terms. Ps, that's a 4.286 Cap Hit.

That leaves 5.361 left to sign Huselius.

Sign Huselius to a 6 year contract that goes 8,8,6,5,3,2 for a cap hit of 5.333 Million

Leaving you with a grand total of 28 thousand dollars of cap space.

I know some will think that I'm signing a lot more than two and you can't tell what they are going to cost. That is true, but if you look up their current salaries, they are all getting significant raises and they may even get less than what I've stated.
