Do We Really Want to Finish 8th?

Whoever makes the final #8 playoff spot gets to play Detroit in a best of 7 with the Wings having home ice. Somehow with the way our team plays, especially on the road, that doesn't sound like much fun. If Howson brings in a couple seasoned playoff vets however, that might change things. Still if we do make the playoffs, and I'll be the most surprised if we do, with the races so close, I hope we can leap up to 7th and at least have a chance to get by the 1st round.

Of all the possible teams, Detroit is one I'd prefer to play. We haven't done too terribly bad against them recently, and we are very familiar with them.

I'd certainly pick Detroit over San Jose, Colorado, Dallas, or Nashville.

We'd be lucky to get 8th, we sure as hell aren't going to get 7th or higher.

I dont know - we tend to do ok against them sometimes, but I think if they are in playoff mode, it's probably a sweep or close to it. When they really come out to play, it gets ugly, especially in Detroit.

But, I guess if you compare them to Nashville, Dallas, and San Jose.... well, ok, I see your point.

8th is better than 9th. Playing detroit in April is better than not playing at all.

I'd love us to play Detroit. Its the only way to finally break the people who think they can still root for Detroit and Columbus. Once they have a reason to hate Detroit like the rest of us, we'll all be better off.

This is what I was thinking. The original question posed "Do we really want to finish 8th?" My answer is, it depends on the alternative. How about the Jackets finish 6th or 7th, hmm? OK, not likely. So if the alternative to 8th is 9th or lower, I'm all for 8th. I don't give a rat's patoot who the first round opponent is.

Who cares who we would play. It's playoff experience for our players.

If you don't think playoff hockey is fun, go do something else with your time.

Dang defeatist attitudes. You make it to the playoff's, all bets are off. There have been numerous surprises in the past.

Ummmm.... yes, even if we play Detroit.

2 home playoff games = loads of cash = more money spent in the offseason = better chance at playoffs next year.

That, and the fact that I think this town will go crazy with a taste of playoff hockey to savor. Making the playoffs would be one monkey off our back; just don't sell the future to get there!

Since we have 5 more games versus Detroit between now and the end of the season, at least we would know exactly what to expect.

I'd like to finish in whatever position gets us Anaheim. If this year "isn't our year" and we're a first-round exit, we might as well go out against a team that can teach us how to really play tough. All Detroit would teach us--if they're in Domination Mode, as opposed to their storied Upset Mode--is how to change our diapers.

We are 1 point out of 8th and 4 points from 5th. We have as good a chance to finish higher than 8th as anyone.

Detroit is much more preferable to Anaheim, San Jose, or Dallas.

Detroit = 3.5 hour drive from Cleveland to see the games

Anaheim, San Jose, and Dallas = No going to playoff away games

Detroit's lost so far at Nationwide, won once in regulation at the Joe, and a shootout win at Joe Louis. Plus, as has been pointed out, they're not doing that great against other Central division teams. And it'd be a lot easier to go on the road to support the team in Detroit than in San Jose or Vancouver.

Hell, yeah, I'll take the 8th seed against Detroit.

At this point, I'll take what I can get. Playoffs is better than being at home. It's something we can rally around and build on for the next season. It would help entice free agents and let them know we're not some basement team, that we are actually starting to emerge.

There are lots of positives to be had with a playoff berth, some short-term, but some long-term. An empire isn't built overnight, but we have to start somewhere, and that time is now. For the first time, I consider us to truly be a playoff competitior. Our next goal is to actually get there, and then progress from that point onward.

I'd play the Patroits in the first round if they were on the docket... As for one point out, we are further than that in reality...more like three points if games in hand are considered. But we still have a decent chance for 8th if we can go on another 4 game winning streak. We are around 9 losses away from being out it.

Who in their right mind believes we will have 9 or less losses in the next 2 and 1/2 months????? We have 9 games against Detroit (5), SanJose (2) and Nashville (2). If we cannot sustain any better intensity level than our last 2 games against Phoenix and Nashville what makes you think we are going to suddenly turn on the energy and succeed in the other remaining games.

I will root for the CBJ every game and I hope I am wrong but CW tells me we are on the outside and losing ground too rapidly.

As for making the 8th spot, yes it would be a feather in our cap and no more "the only team never to make the playoffs", but a 4 game skunking at the hands of Detroit may taste just as bad.

Who knows roughly how much each playoff game generates in revenue for a team?

I know it's a difficult finish but if we can beat Detroit 3 times and split the nashville and SJ games we have a chance. To be honest, losing the last two games has really put a hole in our playoff run. We simply can't lose two in a row anymore-period. If we lose saturday the odds of making he post season will decrease significantly.
