You thought it was a bargain, in fact.

I always thought it was a great contract. If he would not have been hurt so bad and he was still the same guy he was when he signed...we would have a top 4 PP D-man. Its very unfortunate that he had those concussions.

I gladly help my self to some serving of crow on that one. Yikes. What a difference a couple of years and 6 concussions make. That contract does look horrendous now though.

Of course I've got a full plate of Z crow I'm still workin on to finish first..

Nobody is gonna claim this guy now though with his injury history and contract.

I have a feeling he got claimed.

I mean why now? Why wasnt he on re-entry right after he was sent down if we were worried about his contract?

I bet Howy has some inside information about Duvie getting claimed.

I'll gladly serve up the crow about Druval. I never thought the guy was deserving of what Doug gave him, both in money and accolades. Westcott was one of those guys that X-GMDM had his finger prints all over and constantly pimped out. I still remember the infamous Give Duvie the 'A'! thread.

I'll be shocked if he's claimed. He's prime for a buy-out.

P.S. Just for the record, I'm buying crow on Zherdev in bulk so take it easy on me.... yum!

Right, because the Duvie we had then is the Duvie we have now.

It would still be a bargain if he was concussion-free and playing at that level.

I forgot a forum rule was that you can never, ever change your mind about a contract or a player. I'll keep that in mind....not.

Since you obviously have plenty of time on your hands, Wright, dig up everybody else's posts in the history of this forum and see how many times they've changed their mind about something.

I thought the "bag-over-the-head" image was offically retired by rdriensen. Too bad it's been reborn.....

Or course, we have Duvie with a binky now... Nice touch for someone suffering from concussions I guess.

Geez.
I didn't say he was. You actually came closer to saying that by commenting that his health problems weren't a secret then.

Obviously. And Zherdev's contract would suck if he was sucking. I understand.

Not surprised by your reaction though.

BWAHAHA!

Thanks for that Pubs. Sorry I was a jerk-off in that thread but it is so funny to go back and read that stuff from time to time. You were right about Dougie tho....

Sort of puts it all in perspective. Good times and no hard feelings....

Wow, I read three pages and was won out trying to follow the sparks.. As for Duvie and the Jackets, he has been slowed by the concussions but I also think our defense these days is better than back then. He still could be of use as 7th or 8th defenseman but we don't need another of those. He ended up being the odd man out, but I was never high on him anyway so it's working out good imo, as long as we can recoup some of his salary.

That said, I hope he recovers from the concussion problem and finds somewhere to play out his NHL career.

CLEARED

Quote:
-- D Duvie Westcott has cleared re-entry waivers. The Blue Jackets will likely put him back on waivers and assign him to Syracuse, where he'll likely finish the year. GM Scott Howson promised Westcott he'd give him a chance to go to another club -- that's the idea behind the re-entry waivers -- and he lived up to the promise. Unless Westcott really turns it on and gets back to his old self, I think it's likely he'll be bought out of his contract at some point over the summer.
EDIT: BEATEN! I have been refreshing that page every minute for an hour!

Not unexpected, if the team has the flu as bad as they say he could suit up tonight. Wouldn't it be a hoot if he did play and scored a couple of goals, saved a goal and had 12 hits! That would cause a few GDT discussions.

Ok, could someone explain the point in sending him down, then calling him up...Only to send him down again in the near future? I do understand the flu-bug going round & needing him just in case. Is it just to give him a chance to go to another team? Is Howson hoping someone claims him? I just don't understand the politics involved in hockey quite yet.

Yes, Howson is hoping someone will pick him up. Then the Blue Jackets would only have to pay half his salary, which I think has another 2 years left. Compare that to what it will cost if they let him go (buy out). I not sure of the details on the buy out, but I am almost sure that 2/3 of his contract counts towards the cap for TWICE the length of the remaining contract (4 years in this case).

So, if Duvie is bought out:

1.85mil 2008-2009
1.85mil 2009-2010

That's 3.7 million. 2/3 of this is around 2.47mil.

That 2.47mil is paid out over four seasons. (twice the contract length)

618k per year. Is that right?

What does the cap hit become?

lol, I had someone look that type of thing up before. I think it was 75% of your 618k number. Who knows if that was right or not, don't hold me to it.

But in this context, it's probably "Who cares"? I will be amazed if we ever spend anything close enough to the cap for this to even be a consideration.

I think the cap would 618k per year for 4 years.

This is one situation where being in a market our size we'll never haver to worry about b/c we'll never be that tight against the cap.

I wouldn't be suprised to see another buy out or two this offseason either as Howson continues to clean up MacLean's mess..but that's another topic for another time.

I am not sure of all the specifics of how buy-outs and the cap works. So I will just leave it at that.

But if you really would like an answer, there is a show on the XM Home Ice channel on Thursdays from 4-5. It is hosted by Bill Clement and Gary Bettman (yes the comish). You can call into that show and ask how that works. They normally have other NHL execs on there as well who might be able to answer the question. If you don't have XM, you might think about getting it, just for Home Ice, excellent channel.

Or if you have Sirius, you get Hockey Night in Canada which is on 4-6 ET M-F.

Once the merger is finalized this nonsense of the 4 major sports being on two different sattelite providers can finally be put to bed.
