Matt Nickerson

Can anybody tell me how he is playing this year? I saw he is not on Ilves Tampere after playing with Asat.

- bad: immaturity (takes a lot of stupid roughing penalties in order to gain a bad boy reputation)
- mediocre: vision, passing, shooting and skating
- ok: fitness, hitting
- good: mentality (gives everything for the team), aggression
- excdellent: -

He has the tools to become a reliable stay-at-home Dman in FNL. NHL is a very unlikely destination for him in the future.

He has been ok in Ilves so far, but is still far from beeing a key player in this level.

I had the pleasure of watching him when he played in NRH for the tornado... i have been clicking around on the finnish sm league website and found some stats and icetimes. He seems to be leading his team in average ice per game and one of the higher ones in the league. His offensive numbers are not as good as previous years but for some reason i believe he is just an average player... here is the link i found... i hope to see him again back in good ol' Texas!

sorry.... i meant i don't believe for 1 second that he is "just an average" player over there... by his ice times and knowing the talent he has for being such a big kid.

Man, you need to get some good stories from him and post them up here.

At any rate, I wish that Matt could follow through with the technical aspects of his game, because I STILL think that somewhere in that crazy head of his he is capable of being an NHL-caliber stay at home d-man. From the perspective of being a Blackhawks fan, if he was a solid enough defenseman to play the 4th line, I would KILL for that kind of "headcase" on our team, because you know he would protect Toews and Kane and scare the **** out of guys. It's unbelievable to me how much of a reputation this guy has gotten as a 'bad boy', and with the proper coaching who knows what could happen. I kinda wish he woulda stuck it out in Idaho and worked on his game. Oh well.

Why'd he get transferred to Ilves?

Oh, I've got 'em. I'd get a few warnings if I posted some of them though.

Ilves won Lukko 2-1 in preliminary playoffs. In both home games (1st and 3rd) Nickerson was the best defenseman in the ice, but in the second game he made some stupid mistakes that lead to 5-3 PP for opponent. His level of play still varies too much from game to game. Still - I am pretty pleased of his presence, because he has shown a lot of leadership and teamwork attitude.

In general the time in Ilves has really developed him especially in keeping the focus in the game - not in the keeping up the reputation of being a madman.
