FLA Searching for top pairing D-man

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp...14&hubName=nhl

Like most teams, they are searching for a top pairing d-man. The article states that they are not looking for a rental.

Who fits the bill? Are Hagman and Huselius enough to get it done?

I'll give you Poti for Hagman.

To be honest, I have no idea if that's what they are looking for. I'm not an FLA fan; I was simply reporting a TSN article so everyone can discuss it; and because I think the Oilers have something to offer (Smith). However, I don't think a deal between these two is likely because EDM really doesn't need more forwards.

Darryl Sydor might be good. Apparently he's available, but I don't know if he's a top 2 d-man (more like a #3 IMO) and Dudley says they want a top 2... but he could provide some leadership and he's signed for 2 more years at around 4 mil, although that might be too much salary for the Panthers.

Wow, if I were Rick Dudley I'd be all over that. A Bouwmeester-Sydor pairing could probably effectively munch a lot of minutes.

Jackets don't have a 2nd to give. How about Sydor for Huselius and a 2nd, with Columbus picking up part of the salary?

Gonchar would be a perfect fit.

Gonchar doesn't make much sense to me, not really the right age.

I think a number of 'untouchables' might become available if they're willing to move that first round pick. But I don't think you'll get a top pairing defenseman for Husellies and Hagman. I guess it comes down to who Florida have in mind and what they're willing to pay.

Funny how you can say you're looking for d-mans that are going to be your best TWO at this time of the year. I mean, it's like saying "Oh, and by the way, we're still looking for a first line to play on this team. Apart from that, all is well". Doesn't make much sense to me.

Who's going to be willing to sell out their best defensmen? Even if you're out of the playoff, a top d-man is always helpful in a team. Unless you're not going to make the playoffs and lose the player as an UFA. Who fits in that scenario?

I have a feeling the Coyotes might start collecting assets to make a run for Crosby, so perhaps Tanabe, Mara or Vaananen could be moved for the right price. I doubt it though, especially because I don't think that's what Florida is looking at.

As for Gonchar, what do you mean "too old"? If you want a top young defenseman, you need look no further than Florida itself.

Gonchar's clearly the best d-man on the market, but he's also hurt, so who knows how that will play out.

In terms of the rest of what is expected to be available, I think Sydor is just a good an option as anyone else.
Hammrlik is better, but who knows if he's available. Same with Carney.
J. Smith is hurt.
Edit: I forgot to include Zhitnik originally, who certainly is a good player too.

As for first-paring quality guys who are young, I don't imagine anyone that fits that bill is going to be traded.

Gonchar is clearly the best offensive defenseman on the market, but he is really more like a fourth forward than a true defenseman. It depends what type of player FLA is looking for. Do they want a defender to quarterback their pp? If so, Gonchar can't be beat. Or are they looking for an all-around type who is good in his own end too? If so, Gonchar is not the way to go b/c he sucks in his own end, as his awful -22 attests.

Hamrlik is available I think for the right price, as rumors suggest, but personally I think he will only be moved for either a return Milbury can't refuse. Otherwise, he will stay an Islander this season unless we drop out of the playoff race and Milbury will move him at the draft....hopefully to whoever has the first overall!

I would think a guy who is about the age of the core of that team would be better. Rather than Gonchar who they might only get a couple of years out of.

On DM's radio show last week, he said Nash, Klesla, Zherdev are untouchable.
When pressed if there were any other untouchables, he said "other young players" and added nothing else.
I don't think it's a stretch to assume he means he's willing to listen to offers for any other player on the team.

I'd say Hamrlik for Huselius ...and since rival TB has improved with Sydor even more likely...
