George Matthews "attending to family needs back in his home on P.E.I."

Quote:
THIS GUY I KNOW

He really loves his job…

He lives each and everyday and his hobby is now his job…

He is going to miss doing what he loves the most as someone needs him more right now...

He left home a few years back to sacrifice his family for his hobby and his love...

He is a guy that was introduced to my life a few years back and his energy is endless...

His enthusiasm is contagious and it is fun just trying to keep up…

He has no enemies and even has his own language…

He carries a menu with handwritten specialties that he shares with his audience…

He is a creature of habit starting every morning with his trudge through the elements…

He is meticulous, caring, engaging, thoughtful and oh yes type "AAA"…

He loves a "power nap" knowing the day starts at 7 a.m. and ends at 11:30pm…

He has a wardrobe that can only be measured in inches, not feet…

He takes pride in looking his best, but needs to learn to tie a tie…

He is a guy that is going to be missed this week…

He is attending to family needs back in his home on P.E.I.…

He is my partner George Matthews and is one of the best in the biz…

He will be missed for only a short time and our prayers will be with him and family…

George, take the time to love and give the ones you love the same thing you give to all of us every night you are on the air… passion, desire and the want to win!!

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family… YOU will be missed!!

Respectfully,
Your Color Analyst
Bill Davidge

I grew up as a Jacket fan listening to George and Bill every hockey game since inaugural season. It's not easy following NHL here in Norway, Only 1 Jacket game has been broadcatsted a season. But even with a +6 hour difference they made it easy. Without them and their enthusiasm and engagement i would not have been a Jacket fan today. They made me feel i was right there, at the game watching(in my mind). Many night did i lay in bed with them .. on my ear. Sometimes i fell asleep and would wake up with a scooooooooooooore Bluuue jackets or a Rick Nash count the cash ..

Much love and best wishes to you and your family George.

George Matthews is about as great a guy as there is.

He used to come into where I work once a week during the season. He always talked hockey, and never once did I get the impression that he wasn't sincere.

Hope all is well.

Is this permanent or temporary?

George is a class act. He will always stop and chat with you if you strike up a conversation.

Hope everything is good with the family.

Hope everything goes well with George & his family. I'm a fan of his & hope he gets everything sorted out soon.

So who takes the play-by-play for the games while he's away? OT, didn't I see on here that Jim Day took Rimer's spot during one game recently when Rimer had to miss?

Whenever I see George, he calls me by name. That's when you know someone is a class act. Won't be the same around here without you better, get back soon!

Nice tribute from Davidge.
We're lucky to have a number of good guys in the broadcast booth.

I met George through a friend earlier this season & have talked to him a couple times at the post-game show, but I haven't gone to a post-game show since November. What really surprised me is that he recognized me & remembered who I was as I walked down the tunnel to start my locker room tour at Hockey Fest (he & Davidge were walking the other way out into the arena.).

I was impressed that he's able to put names with faces of the fans that he meets, case in point my & Casework's examples.

George extended his hand of friendship to me in year one, and I have been priviledged to know him since. As other priorities have limited my hockey life recently, weeks or months may pass between our visits, but when we rejoin, it's like we never missed a beat. A sign of a true friend.

He IS the voice of the Blue Jackets, and is one of the classiest personnas in ALL of professional sports.

All my best to you, my friend. Know that our prayers are with you, and we look forward to welcoming you back.

SD

George is my favourite play-by-play guy, period. I'm so glad he works for my team.

All the best George, and classy move Bill. Nice work.

Nobody's asked yet so... Who is filling in this week? Wyant? Torgensen? Just Billy D.? Or are they not carrying games on the radio this week?

I've talked to George a few times when i've seen him at the rookie and prospect camps, he's always been very sincere and generous with his time.

I hope everything is alright.

Perhaps they will just broadcast the opposing teams announcers' feed.

Best wishes George to you and your family.

Earlier this season, George had laryngitis or strep throat and they called up the play-by-play man from the Crunch. Funny how it works...maybe they'll do it again.

If not the Crunch guy, they should call Dwight Burgess. Yes, he's the voice of the Crew, but he also knows his hockey.

This has happened a few times in the past few years. I believe George's father is ill. They usually call in Syracuse's play by play guy, Bob McElligott, to fill in.

George was at the annual Powell festival a couple years ago and I got a chance to talk to him, then again at the Chiller one morning. Nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. Here's hoping everything goes well and he's back with us soon.

Even funnier was that George still called the Detroit game & maybe the game after that, despite being raspy.
