Saku Koivu's first ever NHL goal YT

From a game against Los Angeles in 1995

This is the birth of the Koivu-Petrov-Bure 'Smurfs' line

Also you can see John Druce in the video, who's famous for that playoff run with the Capitals when he single-handedly led them to the conference finals.

Brunet scores a beauty in that game too.

I remember the first 3 weeks of that season like it was yesterday.

SAKUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!

Bad goal though.

I miss my smurfs.

Nice non-call by the refs as Petrov gets wrestled to the ice.

Its "coming back" soon, producers are remixing the 1988-1991 period this year for the most part, Eurodance is next..

I remember those 3 weeks too. The dreadful 0-5 start was sure worrying but they played so damn well in late October-November. They were well over .500 after that but were kind've inconsistent the rest of the way. And boy Saku had some zip to his skating there. Too bad those injuries and poor linemates prevented what could have been an all-star career like was projected initially. As good as Saku can be now, he's a shell of what he could have been and a step or two behind his 1996 theatrics. Oh well, this is a special video because it's the start of a great guy's career in Montreal.

What I notice? Valeri Bure had some *** LEGS on him. Him and his brother were incredible. You want your kid to be fast, get Papa Bure to school them.

More Vintage Saku, from one of the first games of the 1996-97 season when Koivu was one of the NHL scoring leaders:

Wow, we complain about Yvon but Bergeron was SO much worse, haha.

I miss the Koivu of old, he was very fast.

Funny to see Koivu score a goal.

I didn't remember the Smurf line, although Petrov was a favorite of mine. I remember the russian line with Zholtok and Zubrus, though.
