I don't understand why everyone wants to trade players for draft picks. Count me out if I have to wait for 4 or 5 more development years.
Dump some old guys with big salaries and pick up a star or 2 in the prime of their career. It's the only way to make the playoffs in the foreseeable future.

Average age of 23.4, here we come!
First off, you don't want an average age that low. You do need some veteran leadership.
As for picks, listen, I'd love to get a guy coming into his prime in a deadline trade. But, those guys aren't being traded at the deadline generally because they are needed by their teams for a playoff run.
A smart GM trades guys who are UFA's for whatever assets he can get, and takes the cash saved from not re-signing those guys to get a UFA that better suit the team needs. Its not an either-or proposition--you build a good organization by always having depth in your system which enables you to make trades in the future.
Picks and prospects will not solve our immediate needs. But those needs can be addressed through the UFA market and through off-season/draft day trades which are more likely to yield us what we want. Picks can be used for that purpose or simply to give us future depth so we aren't in such a position of weakness in future seasons.
All The Way Fedorov He Is Really Rubbing Me The Wrong Way And We Should Probably Get Rid Of Him While He Is O.K. Cause Once He Hits That Age He'll Start Slumping And Columbus Does Not Need That Right Now!
I can agree with that. He was great for us all season.
He was "great" in the beginning of the season. He's been average since. He is what he is. What he isn't is irreplaceable. Personally, I'd like to see us find a younger guy to fill his role.

In case it wasn't obvious based on the tone of my post, I was being sarcastic about wanting a low average age. Thanks for the explanation about leadership though.
sell everyone...new GM=new team...we should be sellers from this moment on, get what we can, lose those contracts for next year....stockpile in the draft and be HUGE players in the FA market

Just a hint, saracasm doesn't travel the Internet so well without this-- Particularly when your post has gems like this

How is he rubbing you the wrong way?...Feds hasn't played since the jackets started slumping.. Fedorov is doing nothing wrong to the team. He's already hit THAT age. He will be traded but that's because his contract is up by the end of the summer and quite frankly the jackets have enough up and coming leaders (nash etc.) so might as well get something for him then let him walk at the end of the year..
