Fast forward 5 years.

Just how good is Mike Lee? Everyone remembers Jack Campbell's brilliant game as a 17 year old vs. Canada in the WJC's, few people remember Lee was the starting goalie for the U.S. throughout much of that tourney. Aside from the Canada game, his statistics would have been great for that tourney and really, he's been impressive in every league he's played thus far.

I feel he's got the most potential of any goalie prospect in the Coyotes system and could very well be a future #1.

Just wondering what anyone else can tell me about this kid. Aside from Coyotes fans here and there, nobody seems to ever talk about this guy.

I haven't really watched him much since his Roseau days except for on weekends when he played the Gophers. I always thought he had a shot to be a solid backup NHL goalie or maybe even a low-level starter; it looks like he's progressing pretty nicely though so who knows.

Lights out at Roseau in high school
USHL Goalie of the Year with Fargo
Impressive WJC tourney aside from the rough Canada game
Captain at St. Cloud State as a Junior
ECHL All-Star in rookie season
3-0-1 1.31 GAA, .960 SV% in the AHL with Portland

I'd say he's progressing quite well.

Coyote fans are talking about the possibility of Visentin going to the ECHL with the way Lee is turning heads within their organization. Sean Burke speaks volumes about him as well.

I know it's still early but he's looking legit.

The Coyotes seem to have pretty good organizational depth in net.

Smith
Labarbera
Johnson
Visentin
Lee
Domingue

The Coyotes might want to carefully evaluate all their young goalies before re-signing Smith to a big contract. There's a lot of potential there.

Agreed. I think signing Smith to a big contract would be a huge mistake.

Tough, though, because if Smith has another season like the last it would be a complete slap in the face NOT to offer him a contract. Ah well, he'd likely get scooped up by another team like Toronto. He'll get his contract either way.

Yes, I'd like to see another season like last years before opening the vault for him. I never thought he was all that great in Tampa, although in his defence, he didn't have much of one. I also think he benefits from Phoenix's system. He always screamed out 1B/2A status to me but I could be wrong.

LOL about the Toronto comment. Wouldn't that be typical Leafs though. Sign him to a big year and with all the pressure on him produce a trainwreck.

Lee has definitely been a fan favorite in Gwinnett and it is good to seem both him and Domingue in the AHL although I have to admit I do hope to get Lee back in time for the playoffs.

What's the scouting report on him? I'm assuming you've been able to watch him quite a bit this year.

I've been to 3 games so far and I think I only saw him play once which was the home opener. The other two games I believe Domingue was in net.

I'm not so sure I would call Labarbera "good organizational depth."
