Today's game is more tight and teams are more even matched than before. There are not that many goals or high-scoring games. You will not see such thrashings as Oilers did in the 80's when they scored almost six goals a game in 1983-84 season.

Effect of above is that nobody can break the old scoring records if game remains as it is. Today best players can get maybe 120 points. I mean, in the high-scoring era Gretzky alone had once 92 GOALS, Brett Hull once 86... numbers that today seem impossible.
