If the Columbus Dispatch Blog is accurate, do you think Howson would go against Hitchcock's wishes and dismantle the team at the deadline? Where is the balance between what the coach wants/needs and what the vision of the future is in the eyes of the GM.

I have a hard time taken that quote from the dispatch to heart.

Hitch has said time and time again he has to make best with what is given to him, and its not his call to say what team he has.

I hardly believe Hitch would say something that bold to the media in the hockey rumour central of the world. If anything Hitch would say it behind closed doors and to Howson.

My guess is Hitch said something like "We will make best with the team we have right now" and they took that as "Jackets arnt moving anyone, and will do their best"

I could be wrong. And I think its rude and cruel of the dispatch to say "He said something juicy, we will tell you later"

I say there's still a chance, but I'm not holding my breath after awful games against CHI & STL. If they hit their stride & some of the other teams on the bubble/just in stumble, they could get in.

That's just it. We can beat Detroit. Playing them in the first round doesn't scare me as much as dealing with another team.

Now getting through the next round would be a question.

No chance of playoffs, and even if they do squeak in, they are not tough enough... this year.

Hey Mel...we got a HACKER on our board.

Wrighton has voted three times! The dirty dog.
He likely did it by erasing his HF cookie.
We must protect the integrity of voting, right?

I'm just glad we're having this discussion.

It's a lot more fun than being 23 points out at this point in the season.

That it so true. If there was one team that could beat Detroit in 7 games it's the Jackets. Gotta make the 8th seed first though. No beatin around the bush, we blew it after the ASB. There should be some spankings for the past 11 game performance.

-Ill let you know after these next three games.
Howson won't trade away futures now. Older players and free agents are still on the chopping block though. It's evident (or it will be by the end of the roadtrip) that once again the CBJ players will be playing golf in early April. Consequently there is no "quick fix" and he'll be looking to boost things over the summer to revamp for next season.

On the plus side, this summer we will have plenty of cap space. Question - will we open the purse strings?

We have always had cap space so that point is moot. But the purse strings is a valid question-I say no.

I'll be surprised if the Jackets make any major moves that envolve big money now or this summer. Howson is going to have enough trouble figuring out how to pay the players we currently have (based on restrictions he will be given).

He may get some balls (and authority) to sign one top line center for Rick Nash but that will be it.

Cap space yes.

Room under the internal budget? Probably not.

Haha yeah, whoops I guess i jumped the gun.

Good question though, will we open up the wallet a little bit? I think it's safe to say we need to. We are in no-man's land between having vets and awesome rooks who aren't ready.

If this team ever wants to make the playoffs, we've got to stop being Scrooge McDuck with the wallet and at least open it up a little bit.

This team is 26th in payroll with 10 mil tied up in 2 under performing old geezers. We are 5 mil under the league average. In my mind, we've got 15 mil to use to resign current players or to obtain replacements.

Give Pascal 3 mil of that on top of his 1 he is already making this year, Fritsche should sign for 1 mil or less. Give Hainsey 2.5, Hedja 1.5, Resign Tarnstrom for less than he is making now to give him an opportunity to prove himself again or at worst resign him for the same 2 mil he is making now if he continues to play well, and resign Peca for maybe 2 mil at most. Let all of the others walk or be traded. (Foote, Vyborny, Fedorov, thats 12 mill worth of under performance right there)

In my mind, that still leaves around 10 mil in spending room give or take what ever may be returned in any potential trades. Thats plenty of room to get some real talent on this team.

I'll buy everyone from the board a beer at the RBar before the first playoff game at the Nat if they make the playoffs.

I feel pretty secure making that bet.

The one team that we had a decent chance to beat on this eastern canada swing, we lost to.

On the very slim chance that this happens I may have to save this post in the archives

The Non-Coward List

Ok...for the record... here are the Jacket fans who voted BEFORE the embarrassing and typical loss in the hockey capitol of the world....

If your name appears on the list AFTER this post/evidence, either your computer was broken, or you're a coward. (J/K)
