So if this Richards thing doesn't go through, what happens instead?

Perhaps we try Marleau, Jokinen otherwise we wait until the summer.

Concentrate on dealing Feds.

I would hope, if we don't get Richards, Howson would push for Vermette. Fedorov+Fritsche/Vyborny is what I'd start with.

I know there isn't a lot of offensive chemistry with this team, but there is some defensive chemistry. If we end up trading Brule + Klesla, I don't think it's going to mess with the chemistry that much. But if you send Fedorov, Malhotra, Fritsche away too, that could mess with it. Also, I think the patience and calmness of Fedorov with the puck is going to be missed a ton if he's gone. His playoff experience could be way to valuable as well. If we end up losing Sergei in the offseason, it may not be that bad. We could have Brassard step in and take over the #2 center spot at the beginning of next year. I like the team we could ice if we just bring in Richards.

Modin-Richards-Nash
Chimera-Fedorov-Zherdev
Novotny-Peca-Vyborny
Murray-Malhotra-Boll

Brassard to Syracuse and Fritsche can sit and be rotated in.

Foote-Hejda
Hainsey-Russell
Tarnstrom-Tollefsen

Methot could either stay in Syracuse or come up and be rotated in and maybe earn a permanent spot.

You do make some good popints, especially about team defensive chemistry. Howson will certainly have some difficult decisions to make in the next few days. I wonder, though, if Fedorov's value to the franchise lies more with his ability to bring a younger, talented player on board who could help the team both in this year's playoff push and in seasons to come than it is in whatever plusses he brings in playoff experience.

The CBJ could certainly benefit from Sergei's puckhandling, his calmness and playmaking abilities but I think that could be offset by having Richards, Peca and Vermette (should he be the one SF is traded for). They all have playoff experience, and Vermette and Richards could be around for several years. To bring Feds back next season he'd have to accept significantly less money (=/-2.5 M?) and probably be willing to accept a less significant role on the team, perhaps as a third line center. I can't see that happening.

Who knows, you may be right-it is a fragile balance the team has right now and I'm sure GMSH doesn't want to upset that. However, I've heard him say on several occasions that his goal is to do what is best for the organization, and I think that means getting an asset for Sergei by the deadline who can make an impact now and in the future, if he can.

If it can't be done, then lets hope Feds has a great, productive final couple of months to the season. War the playoffs!

While I agree with most of what you've said, this is where I run into trouble with what everyone is thinking. If you're going to be bringing in two skilled centers, then what happens to Brassard and Brule? Do you dump both of them in these two trades? I think that it has to be one or the other. Brassard is going to be ready to step into a scoring line center position sooner rather than later. Unless Brassard and Brule are going out in deadline deals this year, I hope we only get one center. Keep Sergei for the rest of the season and let him walk. Brassard will step into his role soon.

Vermette plays LW also.

One or the other may be gone in a trade-I think its Brassard, some would have Brule. Lets say GB is still here after Tuesday. For the duration of this season he plays wing on a line with Fedorov. Next year someone is going to have to fit in the LW spot on Z's line, because I see Chimera back home on the third line. Gilbert would fit quite nicely in there, I'd say.

If DB is still around next year(and, in fact, Vermette is picked up) let Derrick play center on the 2nd line and slide Vermette over to wing. He's played wing for Ottawa-he could do it here. For the rest of this year he could play some in spot duty or sit next to Parma, and watch and learn.

I admit I don't know much about him. But that line makes me...makes me... I don't even know what it would make me do. That's how awesome it would be.

Or if you don't re-sign Peca, you still have:
Nash - Richards - Modin
Vermette - Brassard - Zherdev
Chimera - Malhotra - Voracek
Murray - Novotny - Boll

Drool-inducing! That just shows maybe we're closer than many think.

I still wonder if Foote and Howsen have talked of the trade and come back next year thing. That would be perfect. I know we still have a "shot" at the playoffs...but next year...will be real. God...how many times have I said that crap.

According to Puck-Rakers, Foote hasn't been asked to waive his NTC. I'd assume that means we're keeping him and that the extension will come sometime between now and July.

That domino falls, now Feds situation should be resolved shortly.

Man, on the one hand you can't hold it against him after reading what he said. On the other, if I'm a Leafs fan, he just ****ed in my Corn Flakes in a major way.
