Man, he'll get reamed for that--unfairly to my mind.

Indeed but not his fault. Blame TML management. We have the same problem with a certain captain of ours right now and Modin also has one with 2 more years on it. Hope Howson treats those as pure gold.

It's almost too bad Toronto's next game is on the road, too. I wonder if he'd get booed at a home game on Monday, just in time for him to change his mind about leaving.

(I don't know how fickle Toronto fans are, or how they feel about this situation in general, mind you.)

HAHAHAHAH.

I just went to Hockey Buzz and within the last hour he said Sundin waived his NTC and he heard it from two sources.

God, what a hack.

Renion: I agree. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I hate the thought of guys getting traded. Especially good players. It's just all become such a business it makes me sick. What happened to the days of players playing their entire career with one team?

I believe they call it "free agency."

Umm, you're kidding right? There was no such time ever in this sport. Ever hear of the Renfrew Millionaires? Or the Vancouver Millionaires? There was a reason they had that nickname. Howie Morenz, Ted Lindsay, Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Wayne Gretzky, Ron Francis, etc., etc. There has never been an untradeable hockey player no matter how great they were. Before free agencies teams often traded away players because they were old or, in cases like Lindsay's, to punish them for being a thorn in management's side.

Maybe I was just young and stupid but I don't remember too many players walking away from my favorite teams because they wanted a couple more bucks.

I never said anything to the extent of players were never traded. But there used to be a time(at least in the NBA which I followed until 98 closer than any other sport) where guys meant something to their city and stayed put. I never remembered reading about contracts this and that. But like I said, maybe I was just too young.

Edit: Re-reading I guess my original post made me sound like I was talking about the NHL. I was referring to sports in general.

Looking at the NBA...

While Larry Bird and Kevin McHale were both drafted by the Celtics, Dennis Johnson and Robert Parrish were acquired in trades. Significant parts of the Pistons dynasty were also acquired via trade or free agency--Vinnie Johnson, Bill Laimbeer, Rick Mahorn. The Bulls traded Charles Oakley to get Bill Cartwright (and suckered the Sonics into drafting Pippen and then traded their #8 pick to Seattle for him--which became Olden Polynice).

Free agency has certainly become easier in all sports, but its not as if teams ever had loyalty to their players--the only difference is now players get some say in the matter.

Looks like Tampa fans are being solicited to voice their displeasure before the the Tampa Brass and new ownership meet. It's a pretty interesting little blog ... read it for fun and profit.

Interesting find there, Pluckfer. I don't blame the Tampa fans for their reaction to this.

But, Tampa has HUGE issues that need to be addressed. That team definitely needs to be retooled. One way to accomplish that is to dump some salary so that you have the money to be able to put new pieces into place. Obviously the fact that Tampa is pretty much out of the play-off hunt makes the timing good for this. Plus, having a high draft pick helps to reload the team as well.

Some hard, painful decisions need to be made in Tampa, and I think that if the Tampa fans sort of step back and look at the long term health of the franchise, they might agree that now is the time to start making the needed tweaks.

I think if a trade happens, there will be a new thread created for it. Just my guess.

Thought this was interesting on the latest rumor page on the main boards (from the Toronto Sun, apparently).

Quote:
EDM's 1st round pick held by Ana: tor, la, nyi, cbs, pho and edm
What could we possibly trade the Ducks to land the Edmonton pick? Burke has already said he won't trade it for a rental.

I'm a Devils fan and I come in peace with 2 Q's.

Are the Jackets interested in moving Foote? What would it take from the Devils to get him?

Depends on whether Howson can get him signed to an extension. If he can't by end of business today, there's a good chance he'll trade him to a contender.

As for his worth, I would imagine a 1st round pick and top prospect or young quality roster player would be the asking price.

Puck-rakers said that even if Foote isn't signed by tomorrow it does not mean he will be traded.

Devils definitely can't give both a 1st+a top prospect (farm system is terrible), probably can give just one of the 2. He would be a nice fit though.
