New Defense Pairings

With Modry in the mix, what do you think the new defense pairings will be? I just pray to god that Vandemeer is no longer getting first line minutes. My guess:

Timonen-Modry
Smith- Coburn
Jones- Vandemeer (although I wish it were Kukkonen instead)
Kukkonen as 7th dman.

I'd like to see Parent stay in. Maybe go with 7 defensemen, with Vandermeer sitting.

I thought I heard Al or Bundy say Modry would probably be paired with Coburn.

You know, I missed the 'or' when I first read this post and couldn't figure out what the joke was that I was missing.

My thinking is that Coburn will be paired with Modry. I'm hoping Parent stays in the lineup. I'm thinking Stevens is going to find someway to keep his boy Vandermeer in the lineup. So:

Timonen-Jones
Coburn-Modry
Parent-Smith
Vandermeer - 7th skating as forward

Jones cannot do top pairing minutes. Kukkonen has solidified a spot. I think Parent has too. oVERFLOW!!!

Timonen-Coburn
Smith-Modry
Parent-Kukkonen
Jones would be the 7th dman with Vandy back with the Phantoms

Timonen and Jones should only be paired together when we really need a goal (which, sadly, has been quite often) because Jones can't handle the minutes. Jones works best when he is up against the other team's secondary scorers. In the main, that's when he helps us with his modest offensive skill (which isn't so modest in comparison to most of our defense.)

Good post, on target, and made me chuckle. Yes my main man Jonesie suffered after about five games at 25 mins a game. He looked back then the way Richards looks now - near-gassed, weak on the stick, weak on skates.

I am doubting the Flyers are done on D, and I think their chips to send elsewhere are Kukkonen and Smith and Vandermeer. Jones maybe too, but he's RFA, maybe that doesn't matter I dunno. Timonen, Coburn, Hatcher ain't goin nowhere.

Maybe something like...

Timonen-Coburn
Modry-Smith
Kukkonen-Jones

Vandy is #7. As much as I like Parent, there's a logjam now and he's the one who doesn't have to clear waivers.

Maybe this move ends up being good...I'll have to wait to see Modry play a few times before I judge him too quickly, but I would've been perfectly happy not making this trade any doing this here on out, barring any further injuries...

Timonen-Parent
Coburn-Smith
Jones-Kukkonen

Vandermeer
Hatcher

^^^^That would've made me perfectly happy.

Kukks - Jones should be our third pairing with Jones seeing some time on a PP unit. That is an ideal third pairing in the NHL and one that generally is a sign of a strong defensive corps. Perhaps that pairing isn't possible without a few moves (Jones, for example, has been forced to play above his abilities--obviously not his fault.)

I agree with those who have said
Timonen-Coburn
Smith-Modry
Jones-Kukkonen

What we'll probably see
Timonen-Vandermeer
Coburn-Modry
Smith-Jones

Loved the way Kukkonen played last night. Hopefully Stevens starts recognizing that he is good for something.

Though I predict that Hatcher retires at the end of the season (and that Homer has known this since before the season began) there is no way that Hatcher doesn't play on this team when healthy. Say what you will about his play, no team will bench a veteran player that has Captained a SC winner. You don't want every player in the league watching a blatant act of disrespect. That's something that everyone who posts we should waive Hatcher/Smith doesn't realize. You can't throw veteran players under the bus. Dumping Gauthier was necessary but too many moves like that earn you a bad rep. Buffalo's treatment of their veteran players will hurt them for a long time, for example.

Coburn will likely be paired with Modry. Coburn plays on the left and Modry on the right. The only issue is that Coburn's offense (what there is of it) will likely be curtailed.

Kukkonen BETTER have solidified a spot. If I'm Lasse and Stevens makes me a healthy scratch again, I tell him to eat a dick and refuse to play for him ever again. Stevens' treatment of Kukkonen has been downright dishonorable and criminal (not like this is news, of course).

I wasted so many more words trying to argue the same thing in another thread some days ago. I agree with you 100%

I wish I could've been as succinct.

You guys have all said what you feel the lines should be. But let's be honest, Stevens is too myopic to sit Vandemeer. This team is still very much in the playoff hunt (even though the crappy play has been turned up a few notches recently), which hurts the hope that Parent will play a whole lot going into the playoffs (for lack of NHL experience). That being said, Kukkonen has been playing well lately, but for some reason Stevens can't see this over his man crush for Vandy. Do you think another move is coming to cease the logjam on the backend?

I'm ok with that. No sense sending Parent down now - or making a trade IMO just let the season ride out and let the young guys get experience.

On the contrary, the trade for Modry will directly result in Parent being sent down.
