He'll definitely play in our 5th/6th position, can I ask why was he playing so much, is it because of the injuries?

Phaneuf-Sarich
Regehr-Aucoin
Eriksson-Hale/Vandermeer/Warrener

our defense will look something like this, not too bad.

I liked Vandermeer his first skate in Philly. Second time around, not so much. I think Mr. Sutter just might be able to get more out of him than Stevens could though. Good luck with him!

Yes, in part because of the injuries...and in part because our coach had a love affair with him. It's hard to believe that Stevens was on board for this move.

The main thing wrong with Vandy's recent play was poor bench coaching. He is a third line defenseman who should be playing 12 to 15 minutes maximum a game. Stevens had him playing too many minutes and a lot of top line minutes. I hope that Stevens is still learning that part of the coaching profession and wasn't just being stubborn. If Keenan manages his ice properly, then Calgary picked up a nice d-men for a 3rd round pick. Vandy has his skill and limitations - he just needs a coach to use him properly.

He was misused as a top d-man pairing and the defense is in flux with the rotating injuries to the group and forwards. He even played a 4th line forward last night. He was a turnover machine -- shouldn't be playing 20 minutes a night.

Watch the goal he scores against the NY Islanders. It looks like he possesses some puck-moving ability. In this play he does read the play very well and jumps up to score a nice one.

Now that we've traded him to you, I promise that he'll erupt into a top pairing puck-moving playoff game-winning player, they always do.

Something in the water here, no doubt.

I hope he does well in Calgary. He did not play well for Philadelphia, and was by far our worst defensemen (and we our share of bad defensemen)

He was a physical player but has been a shell of his former self since he injured Ryan Flinn in a fight. He can still scrap tho. He makes a habbit of offensive zone turn overs and bad pass' out of the offensive zone. He is not a puck moving defensemen, nor is he going to get many points.

Vandy would be best as a 3rd pairing. Good Luck and hope he works out.

I apologize for Vandy.

Actually, honestly, he was being played way too much since our coach is functionally retarded. Your team will use him for what he is: 3rd pairing/depth. In that role, he will be fine. In Philly he was partnered with Kimmo Timonen and that worked about as well as a soup sandwich.

If you use Vandermeer for what he is...a 6-7 d-man, he may be NHL caliber.

John Stevens had some sort of love affair and insisted on pairing him with Kimmo Timonen and give him PP minutes and not play Lasse Kukkonen even though Stevens would consistently complain about how we wouldn't block shots, when he would put our best shot blocker in the press box.

I think the last straw was when Vandermeer tried to get into a fight on Sunday and Josh Gorges wouldn't go it basically cost the team a game we couldn't lose.

Mike Keenan isn't an idiot, he's smart enough to not put Vandermeer in a position to fail.

Flyers fans might not have even seen Vandy at his best (but we definally saw him at his worst) because of the amount of time on ice our idiot coach gave him. Vandy is a 3rd pairing defenseman and ******** John Stevens was playing him 20 minutes a game.

I hope he works out for you guys.

Keenan's been around long enough to know not to play this guy so much and not to play him on the PP and PK.

Agreed. A puck moving d-man is needed...You don't need 8 defensemen for a playoff run, but seeing as how the Flames don't have anyone even close to being ready on the farm, I guess this deal would make some sense then...Other teams might not have to make this kind of deal because they have deeper talent pools in the minors...

That statement right there is exactly why our coach is an idiot and should be fired.

Does this leave us a pick in the first three rounds other than our 1st?

Personally, I don't mind trading for another depth defensemen, but I suppose, that we'll see another trade, which will send one of our D-men out of town (presumably Warrener).

It is a '09 third round pick not a '08, so the Flames have there 1st and 3rd for this year, LA has our 2nd.

So my only major concern regarding this trade has been eliminated, but I should read more carefully.

The Devils fans were saying the same things about David Hale last year, and he's been 'OK'.

True, but we have alot of these 'OK' Defencemen. One of 'em being great would be nice.

But how are we going to get a great defensman with just a 3rd round pick. See this trade for what it really is...

a replacement for Warrener.

Fine depth move for us. Physical player who can chip in offensively more then Hale or Warrener on the 3rd pairing. I like this move.
