GDT: Wings @ Flames, 7:00 MST (Sportsnet West/Fan 960)

Detroit Red Wings: 42-15-5, 1st in Central, 1st in Westen Conference

@

Calgary Flames: 31-22-8, 3rd in Northwest, 8th in Western Conference

The Wings have won all 3 of the previous meetings this season, and look to complete the season sweep tonight. The most recent tilt between these clubs ended in a 5-3 wings win back on November 27.

The wings, however will be without defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom, as he injured his right knee in the Wings most recent game, and he is expected to be out for around 3 weeks.

The flames will have their newest acquisition, Jim Vandermeer, playing tonight, and he will be wearing #4.

Miikka Kiprusoff is expected to start for the flames.

Pre-Game report:
http://flames.nhl.com/team/app?gameN...8&service=page

The Flames have won two in a row while the Wings snapped a 6 game losing streak beating Colorado 4-0 on February 18.

The flames need to take advantage of the injured Lidstrom and play a smart game tonight. With the standings as packed as they are, two points can go a long way. Here's hoping Vandermeer has a good start as a flame.

GO FLAMES GO!!!

Along with Lidstrom the Wings are missing Rafalski, Kronwall, Cleary, and Hasek.

The Wings blueline looks as such.

Chris Chelios - Kyle Quincey
Brett Lebda - Jonathan Ericsson (NHL debut)
Andreas Lilja - Derek Meech (Dion's Junior partner)

The fact that the Red Wings have key players like Lidstrom and Rafalski out tonight (as well as Kronwall and Cleary) leads me to believe we'll see a Flames loss. I hate to be negative especially after a two game winning streak, but I've seen this episode one too many times from this team - failing to take advantage of opportunites like this. Here's hoping I'm wrong and end up eating my words by the end of this game.

No. 4 in your program

Quote:
There'll be a Red Deer connection to one of the Flames pairings tonight as newcomer Jim Vandermeer (who's wearing No. 4) is partnered with fellow Rebels junior alumnus Dion Phaneuf. Apparently that's what Darryl Sutter meant the other day when he said Vandermeer will be a good complement to the club's young blue-liners.

Cory Sarich and Robyn Regehr are still together while David Hale and Adrian Aucoin form the other duo. That leaves out Rhett Warrener and Anders Eriksson.

Mark Smith is absent from this morning's skate.

I'm torn. Will the Flames get up to play because it's the Red Wings or will they look at the roster injuries and think it's going to be an easy night?

Hope to see the former especially since their's a good chance this is a playoff preview.

Go Flames Go!

This is the Flames' chance to show killer instinct and beat an injured Detroit team. Even if they are injured, they're still elite and can score lots of goals - which they usually do against Calgary. I predict a win but a lackluster effort wouldn't surprise me.

This will be interesting because Lidstrom has almost never missed more than a game a year. I think he, and not the old stars like Yzerman, Fedorov and Shanahan, is what makes the Wings tick and elite. It'll be interesting to see what they play like without him.

I don't know how I feel about the Phaneuf - Van der Meer pairing. I thought we might see it but not right off the bat. I guess this means they don't like Aucoin playing with Dion on a regular shift. Vandy is going to be a solid pick-up but he may be overmatched like Eriksson was playing on the top pairing. But if Vandy and Dion have played together there may be something there.

I'm excited for this one. Lidstrom pretty much eliminates Iginla anytime we play these guys, so I'm looking for Iggy to have 3 or 4 points in a convincing flames win. That said, if detroit was healthy, it'd be the 4th straight for the wings tonight, so lucky us.

This is a classic trip up game, the Wings are hurt but I see them winning tonight.

Interesting to see Vandermeer paired with Dion. Also I thought he'd wear #23 but hey it's just a number.

Pretty good period. It looks like the Flames aren't going to take the Red Wings lightly based on tonight so far.

Did anyone see the tribute to Mickey Renaud? Just curious what it was or if it was just the Video every OHL team will be playing.

Kiprusoff had bad positioning but a spectacular glove hand on that save.

I liked the period overall but I can't say that I'm impressed with Vandermeer so far.
